I am attempting to create a home LAN by crossover cable between a XPhome desktop box and a laptop Toshiba Satellite A40-S120 with XPhome. I have spent DAYS researching this problem on the web and on experts exchange archives to no avail.
Setup is as follows:
Desktop
1) NIC to cable modem, functioning with internet access. ICS is activated.
2) NIC to LAN. NetBIOS enabled. Files shared. Name: Lemond, Workgroup: LETOUR.
Laptop
NIC to LAN (Intel PRO/100 VE onboard). NetBIOS enabled. Files shared. Name: Lemond, Workgroup: LETOUR.

Things that I have tried:
1)Forcing both NIC's to 10M half duplex
2)Installing NetBIOS/IPX/SPX
3)Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2004 from laptop
4)Uninstalling NAV2003/Norton Internet Security 2003/Norton Utilities 2002 from desktop (NIS was configured to allow traffic from 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0)
5)Reinstalling LAN NIC on desktop and laptop
6)New drivers for both LAN NIC's
7)Guest account enabled on both computers
8)Browser service is running on both computers
9)My cable modem allows internet access when hooked up to either of the three NICs
10)Turned off wake on LAN for the desktop. The laptop NIC was buggy when I tried to turn off WOL: It would intermittently be "not recognized on global PCI scan" at startup, according to the Intel PRO utility.
PING results from laptop
1) PING 127.0.0.1 works
2) PING 192.168.0.2 works
3) PING 192.168.0.1 timed out x4
4) PING XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX timed out x4
5) PING 206.169.61.185 timed out x4
6) PING
http://www.experts-exchange.com/ could not find host
Intermittently, after rebooting one or both computers, I am able to ping from desktop to laptop. A brief ray of light: after uninstalling NAV2004 from the laptop, I have been able to ping from laptop to desktop a couple of times for a few minutes. This stops working spontaneously without any configuration changes on either end.
Please note that this is the same client NIC that was in
"Solution Title: Networking by crossover (2 WinXPPro PCs)

that stevenlewis worked on.
That problem was unsatisfyingly resolved when Ahmudo uninstalled NAV2004 on his client computer. I suspect the Intel NIC because its features/options are far more extensive than my two other NICs (AOpen PCI and D-Link PCI).
Please help!!!! By my research, only the great stevenlewis could fix this problem....
