Question

permission to use this network resource

Asked by: acsell

Hi, I have a home network of 3 computers. Two are running XP Home and the other 95. When I try to access the files on one of the XP machines(NEW) from either the other XP(EVESHAM) or the 95(RICHARD), it says access denied when accessing Windows, Program files or documents and settings for example e.g.

Z:\Program Flies is not accessible

Access is denied

and.....

\\New\c\Program Files is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.

Access is denied.

Is there a setting I need to change to gain access to these folders?

I have the built in XP firewalls disabled and disabled Mcafee firewall.

They all have the same work group and can all see each other.

I'm using TCP/IP for the internet sharing and netbeui for the file sharing.

could this be anything to do with it-
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1455470,00.asp

This is the error message that I am getting-
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/JRMC137/accessdenied.JPG

Is this setup right-
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/JRMC137/ipconfig.JPG

Why does it say Netbios over TCP/IP disabled when It is enabled under wins in TCP/IP propertes?

Thanks in advance for any help given,

Acsell

First, try to disable simple file sharing:

http://www.winbookcorp.com/_technote/WBTA20000876.htm

Second, with peer-to-peer file sharing, you must use a user account and password that is available to all machines and give that account access to the files.

Third, you mention you are using NetBEUI for files sharing?  I assume that means you installed NetBEUI on the XP machines since it is not included by default?

Last....What says NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled?  You say it is enabled in WINS.  Where is it telling you that it is disabled?

did you enable the guest account?

Windows 95 is always using the guest account to access shares as it is not possible to enter username / password somewhere.
The guest account is normally diabled.

the guest account on the XP machine that is.

95 does not need the guest account.  You simply need to install Client for Microsoft Networks on the 95 machine in networking properties.  95 will use whatever username and password combination you use to get into the system to begin with...it does not use the guest account by default.  I've never heard of that in my career yet....and every problem I've ever come across where Win 9x cannot connect to an NT-based OS, is all a result of usernames/passwords.  95 has a username control panel applet you can go into the set the username and password.  I would check that.

Although 95 may not ASK you for a username and password, you are still logging in with a username and password on 95.  It has just been "remembered" and logs you in automatically.

Check the CLient for Microsoft Networks.  Then check usernames/password on both machines to make sure they are identical.

Hi, I have tried giving my account on both PC's passwords and tried it with no passwords. In XP home, it doesn't have the option to turn off simple filesharing. I've installed netbeui manually on both of the XP machines. I have also enabled guest accounts on both machines.

When I go ipconfig -ALL I get the following-
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/JRMC137/ipconfig.JPG
I was wondering why under some options, it says netbios disabled.

I have found this which says something about setting permissions (see bottom of page)-

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_ts_fileany.mspx

I can't find anywhere to set permissions, there is meant to be a security tab under sharing or something but I can't find one.

I never had this trouble when networking XP to 95 before and both computers can access all of the files on the second XP computer, why not with the new one? I'm sure it must be something in the settings of the new PC because it isn't all folders being denied access to, just the windows, Program Files and the users under Documents and Settings. It will let me access shared documents and all other folders on the C drive and will let me print on it's printer.

Thanks for your help, Acsell

'disable simple file sharing' is an XP pro feature,  with home you are stuck with it as is
as well as setting permissions using the method listed in that link

>>I have tried giving my account on both PC's passwords and tried it with no passwords
Just to double check this.  For it to work you need to have the same user name with the same password on all computers

Hi, I have all the same users on both PC's with the same login names. I added a password to my account and the same password to my account on the second PC but I'm still having the problem of access denied.

Thanks for your help, Acsell

I found the problem, I needed to log in as each user in turn and from within their account allows the sharing of their files. I had to do this for every user but I no longer get the access denied error message when trying to access the different users areas over the network.

Thanks, It seems to be quite a strange problem and I still don't know quite what caused it.

Thanks for your help and time
