Question

Other Windows workgroup computer is not accessible

Asked by: majala

Hi,
I have very simple Workgroup here in my home where I have two computers (Computer1 and Computer2) joined to this group. I can see both computers from "View workgroup computers" and I have shared some resources (one folder from both computers) to the workgroup.

I can explore Computer2 shared folder from Computer1 but not vice versa. When I try to access Computer1 (doubleclick Computer1 from "View workgroup computer") I get an error which sais:

"\\Computer1 is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Logon failure: user account restrictions. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced"

Well, I don't know what is actually wrong here...?

- I have shared these folders same way from both computers.
I don't know why, but somehow sharing forms doesn't look same in these computers. When sharing folder (right click folder and clicking Sharing and security...) in Computer1 there is five different tabs (General, Sharing, Security, Web Sharing, Customize) in form when in Computer2 there is only three tabs (General, Sharing, Customize). Hmmm... if I remember right I installed IIS to the Computer1 some time ago... maybe this is the reason?
- Both computers have Windows XP Professional (SP1) installed.

I haven't played with Windows networks a lot, so I could use some help here! I suppose this isn't very difficult one but I'm getting quite frustrated here...

Run local security policy editor from control panel admin tools and set the local policy, Network Access: Let everyone permissions apply to anonymous users, to enabled and make sure guest account is enabled

or
on the XP machine

Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy

Security Settings

Sharing Mode- Change this to "Classic Mode - Local users Authenticate as Themselves" (as opposed to "Guest only" the default model)

this fix will be applied after a restart

If you use the second method, then add the username and password that you log on tot he other mahcine to the one that you can't access.
example if you log on to machine #1 with
username: user1
 password: 123
then add to machine#2
username:user1
password: 123
give them the appropraite permissions to the share(s)

Hi,
I just read some of your comments to the question "Windows XP Home computers not seeing XP Professional or 98 computers".

1. When I put that "Use simple file sharing" on -> I could access to the computer but it asked me User name and Password.

2. When I enabled Guest mode from Computer1, I could access to the computer and I see those shared folders (Computer1 didn't ask me any User name or Password), but I couldn't access those folders.

3. When I added Everyone to the both folders Security tabs "Group or user names" window -> now I can access to both folders without user names and passwords.

I did also that Sharing mode change to the Computer1. I also read that document behind link you gave me, but well... I don't quite get what I should do with those passwords and so on... When I looked that "Sharing and security model for local accounts" from Computer2 it was Guest only mode.

So basically, I can now access shared folders in both computers (without User names and passwords) but should I still put on some features? I guess security level of the sharing isn't the best possible at the moment...

>>I guess security level of the sharing isn't the best possible at the moment...
that is true, but how secure do you need it? if it is just your two machines, and you trust the users of both mahcines then it should be no problem
I would setup sone alarm on both machines
www.zonelabs.com
free
If you want more security, then you need to add the users from one mahcine to the other, disable the guest account,
on the XP machine

Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy

Security Settings

Sharing Mode- Change this to "Classic Mode - Local users Authenticate as Themselves" (as opposed to "Guest only" the default model)

this fix will be applied after a restart

See:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/proddocs/506.asp?frame=true

then when  you log on to one machine, these credentials will be used to check to see if you have permission to access the share (of course you wil have to add those users to the permissions to the shares)
On my home network, I let the guest account work (but I trust my wife LOL)

Yes, well I trust both machines in my network. The reason why I'm worried is that Computer1 is attached to company intranet with ADSL-connection and through that to Internet (my two computers are attached to each other with WLAN access point). Company network is of course protected against outside world with firewalls but company network itself is very big too, so I would like to protect my computer against it too.

I have Zonealarm installed to my computer and my own intra has been configured as trusted zone.  I guess I don't have so many worries any more, but somehow I don't always trust those personal firewalls and I have always thought that these "share"-things are definitely the things one should avoid...

So if you just would briefly explain me some things:
1. What is the difference between Classic Mode <--> Guest only (like I'm three-year-old...:) ?
2. How can I add those user permissions so that only other computer can access to shared folder?
3. Why in my other computer there isn't Administrative tools in Start menu?

Thanks for you answers!

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-03-14 at 11:06:01ID: 10592966

1. In classic mode, the users are authenticated as themselves, in guest mode they are authenticated as a guest, and only have guest priveledges, even if they log on with a username and password that is on the machine.
2. you need to add the user from machine #2 to mach#1
see the example above
3. go to control panel, admin tools, you can access them there. there is a setting to add them to the programs menu
right click on an empty area of the task bar and choose properties, start menu, customize, check show admin tools

Hi

I think you net to install NetBIOS Protocol in both computer, my best guess one of you computer hasn't  got  NetBIOS installed

How do do this GOTO Control Panel --> Network Connections -- Select the Local Area Network Connection Properties by Right-Click on the Connection icone, Then click Install Button Under the Heading General Tab "This connection uses the following items" Select Protocol and install The NetBIOS related item

thanks
Cedric

Cedric, just an FYI. You can't install NetBIOS, you can only enable it. You can install NetBEUI, but they are not the same thing. for the difference see here

also, this question has already been answered :-)

I ran into the exact same situation as majala and tried all of the suggested solutions without success.  I was finally able to get Computer 2 to see Computer 1 by making sure their LAN Authentication Manager settings were the same.  To do this:
1) Go to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy
2) Go to Security Settings
3) Look for: Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level
4) Make sure the values in Computer #1 and Computer #2 are the same.  To ensure the highest level of authentication, I recommend changing the value of both computers to “Send NTLMv2 response only\refuse LM & NTLM”.
* The above settings assume you wish to use the Classic sharing mode as mentioned in the thread.
