Also have a look at the following link. It is quite old and doesn't refer to w2k but there may be something in there that will point you in the right direction.

From my Windows 2003 Domain Controller that is the PDC Emulator and has all the master roles, I can validate the trust with no problem. I am also using a LMHOSTS file on this server. From the other side of the WAN on the NT 4.0 PDC, I also have a LMHOST File and can access the Windows 2003 Domain Controller that has the master roles as well.
My problem is that a different Domain Controller on my Windows 2003 Network will not validate the trust because it cannot find the logon server in the NT 4.0 domain. I made a LMHOST File and did nbtstat -R and that did not help. I also tried to create a new secure channel using the nltest tool from the resource kit, however I also received a No logon server available message.
Any suggestions?

DenisBS, I understand about "If a Domain is trusted by another Domain then surely you don't have to get each domain controller to validate the trust," however, the computer that has the share happens to be a domain controller. I assume that it is trying to use itself to authenticate, however since there is an error with the trust from this particular server, it doesn't work. The proper information is listed in WINS, besides the lmhosts file would bypass this anyway. Any other suggestions??
Hi,
I don't really have too many more suggestions for this. Problems with trust relationships usually come down to problems with WINS resolution. If you are getting the wrong answer from the WINS server I am not sure that the LMHOSTS file entry will prevail.
Try nbtstat -c and see if the cache contains the correct IP address for the remote server.
Also it may be worth removing the WINS server address on the domain controller temporarily and see if this allows the trust to be validated from the LMHOSTS file.

I tired that. I removed the WINS address from the server, did a nbtstat -R to clear the cache and tired the trust and it did not work. I then also stopped the WINS server just in case it was somehow contacting that server. Still no luck. I tried to redo the LMHOSTS file with the wins server off, and that did not work. I guess its time for the $245 call to microsoft.
Thanks for your help.
Hi,
I am out of Ideas, I have found another reference to this problem on another website but they have mainly gone through the same process as we have and have not found a resolution either at the moment.
There is a link to troubleshooting trust relatinships here, maybe this will provide a clue to the answer.

Hi,
It just may be worthwhile checking the makeup of your LMHOSTS file against the info here

Hi
I am not clear what our problem is. If a Domain is trusted by another Domain then surely you don't have to get each domain controller to validate the trust.
Exactly what problems are you having with the trust relationship.
