Question

Network path not found

Asked by: Manuhia

I'm having problems adding one of my pc's to our domain.  I get a "network path not found" error message when I attempt to join the domain.  I have performed the following:

ping to domain controller - OK
ping from domain controller - OK
nslookup to domain controller - OK
ipconfig /all - shows correct dns, wins and dhcp server
replaced nic
removed record from wins & dns

I feel like it's a name resolution problem but I'm not sure where else to look/what else to do.  The other odd thing is that with my network cable plugged in, I cannot make any changes to local area connection or restart/shutdown without powering off the pc.

any help would be appreciated!!

I am using Windows XP Professional on client connecting to a Windows 2000 domain.

I tried resetting tcp/ip and Winsock using:
netsh int ip reset
winsockxpfix.exe
but I'm still having the same problem adding this computer to the domain.

Here is additional info on the problem:
--If I make changes to Local Area Connection Properties (DNS settings, WINS, enable/disable nic), I have to boot up without the network cable plugged in, make the changes, and then plug the cable back in.  If I have the cable plugged and a DHCP assigned IP address, I hang trying to making changes to any of the network settings.   When I restart after the hang, I get past Saving Settings and Windows is Shutting Down but I hang at the blue screen that follows that screen.  This also happened when I tried to issue the netsh command so I had to bootup without my cable plugged in, issue the command and then plug in.
--Task Manager shows Winlogon is running at 45-50% (not sure if that's related...)

ANY HELP would be much appreciated!!  Thanks!!

sorry for the late respons here.  From the looks of things, there is a problem internal on the client side.  changing  the configuration and such should not cause hang ups like you mentioned.
Can you change the name of the workgroup at the client? make one up to see if it will change, then try adding to domain again.
Have you tried adding the client at the server first?
Have you successfully added clients to this domain with the current setup and config?
hope something here helps you a bit
good luck

Thanks for the response.  I resolved the problem by renaming the computer, assigning it a static ip address, deleting old records off of the Wins server and creating a new record and replicating the records to our other Wins server.  You were heading down the right track!!

General Advice:
- TCP/IP NetBios Helper Service must be running
- Make sure, that in case of VPN or routing between client and server NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.

Under the properties of the LAN card, confirm 'Client For Microsoft Networks' is ticked & enabled

This was unticked on the pc that I had the problem with, once this was done the pc added to the domain without any problems.
