Browse All TopicsWe currently have NT4 domain controllers and Win2k servers and clients. We are upgrading 3 servers to Win2k3 and a couple of them will act as Domain Controllers. We will have Win2k DC's at our branch offices. Is this possible? Can you have Win2k and Win2k3 DC's in the same domain? Which should be the Master DC? How does Active Directory differ from 2k and 2k3?

Yes. You will need to run the adprep command on all of the 2000 domains in the forest, whether or not you are going to upgrade them. See the following link:

You run adprep /forestprep FIRST on the forest's infrastructure master, then after complete (and after allowing for some time for replication to complete), you need to run adprep /domainprep on all domains master controller for each domain.
We have 2000 and 2003 servers running on our three college campuses. Works fine.
