Question

Wireless Networking

Asked by: WestonGroup

We have 2 servers running windows 2000 server off of a half T1 line

about 40 computers in a central office

We are a national healthcare company with multiple locations in multiple states

What we are looking to do is add another server to our corporate office, install this web based documentation system that is going to link to our website.

We want all our therapists nationally to have laptops and to be able to access this documentation software to enter patient data.  Its going to be webased so they would be able to access our website and then link to the system

My question is:

if each building throughtout the us  has a dsl or some type of high speed connection can I set them up for wireless networking so they can access this documentation software in our corporate office?

Would I be able to attach a router to the dsl connection that has wireless capabilities and then setup an access point for the laptops to read and be able to gain internet access and log into our servers?

If so could someone explain in detail how to go about doing this, what type of equipment would be needed, modles, what setup would be involved on the laptops and what set up would be involved in our corporate office/on the servers.

This is fairly urgent so I would appreciate any type of help

Thank You

Hi WestonGroup,
There are several ways of doing this. The basic structure can be as you describe with a wireless router/accesspoint in each building connected to the DSL.

The simplest way would then be to access the documentation system through your web page with login and password. However since you're dealing with patient data you'll have to consider the security issue. To send patient data over internet is always a risk no matter how well the solution is built. Adding wireless networks is another possible point of entry for someone with criminal intent. The least you should do is to buy hardware capable of creating a VPN tunnel through internet and wireless accesspoints with support for WPA and use encrypted communication like SSL to access the data.

This isn't easy to guide you through in a discussion group, and I don't think you want to have your configuration displayed here either so my suggestion would be to contact a local consultant at your head office to help you out with this.

Cheers and good luck!
MaB

I would tend to agree first, if you are going to run any part of this network over the Internet (Is this within HIPPA?), you will at least need to setup a VPN hub and spoke to and from every site. This can be done with several pieces of equipment (Cisco PIX for one). As to your Wireless question, Pending you have wired connectivity, I would ask what is the size of these remote offices? If they are small you could setup an AP (with at least WPA/AES encryption) which would allow your offices to get access, if the offices are larger it gets a bit more interesting, here you are getting more into a wireless solution, which includes several wireless AP's which connect to each other, this would allow you to 'roam' between the AP's say from floor to floor.

Yes we need to be HIPPA Compliant

We would like the therapists to be able to use the laptops anywhere in the buildings, the buildings aren't small.

So I would need 1 router that supporst wireless connections to connect to the dsl or t1 line
I would need multiple ap to connect the laptops to the router which connects to the outside

Now if these laptops are just connecting to the internet (our website) and linking to the web based documenation software how would a vpn be set up.  I thought VPN just tunnel right to the server?

In this case you would actually want a router to router vpn setup. That way anything withing the various subnets would be routable across the entire WAN. Another thing you need to look at is wireless security. At the very least you should have WEP enable (or WAP) I would also do mac address filtering and set the AP to not broadcast it's name.

I agree with ew, I would setup rtr-2-rtr VPN's which connect the networks and provide for a secure way of communicating. However, I don't know the HIPPA regulations for this and what level of encryption you need.

Agree to, and have to say that I don't know the HIPPA regulations either so I can't be helpful with how to fulfill those requirements.
