Can't browse SBS 2000 Server in network

I have a SBS 2000 SP4 with ISA, Exchange, SQL installed.  The server crashed and after reboot, I can't find it in the network.  From the workstation, you could still login, receive e-mails, ping it and VNC the server.  The workstation can't see the SBS in the network browser nor get into it's mapped drives.

Before it crashed, I'd installed additional NICs (Compaq NC3121) on the Compaq ML320 Server to combine them with the exisitng NIC using Compaq's Network Team  configurator.  I had reverted back to the original settings again after the crash.

Other details (may not be revelant) are the IIS is not working after the crash.  I had to reinstall the IIS and Exchange again too.

Any suggestions on how to overcome this?  It's been 48 hours without sleep now... :(

Thanks.  I download and installed the Netbios Browser Console.  I configured the profile and this is what I have found

\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Browser\\Parameters\\ISMasterBrowser False
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Browser\\Parameters\\MaintainServerList Yes

I changed the ISMasterBrowser from False to Yes but there is still can't browse.

The browcon report says that the Domain Master Browser is not found.  How do I proceed?

Ok

Try to check server using UNC path. Do u get "The Remote Computer is not available"

Check "File and Print sharing" is enabled or installed on the server network connection ?
Check Computer Browser service in Services.msc snap-in.
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP from Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties > Advanced > DNS > "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
What all clients are u using ?

The Computer Browser service is normal - Starts automactically.

I've just enabled NetBIOS protocol and rebooted the server.

File and Print Sharing is enabled too.

Tried UNC path but got "Windows cannot find '\\netbiosname'.  Check spelling and try again.

There is a mix of W2K Pro, Win 98, WinXP Pro.  The client I am using now is W2K Pro

Do you think it's something to do with the DNS?

I did further testing by trying to access the UNC path of other PCs from the SBS.

I managed to access all the other servers and some PCs in the network but they all can't seem to find the SBS on the network or successfully access the SBS on the UNC path.

Weird.

OK.

I deleted and recreated the zone and tried nslookup.  The command I used is "nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 127.0.0.1".  The reply was "Can't find server name for address 127.0.0.1: No response from Server.  Server:unkown Address:127.0.0.1.  *** Unkown can't find xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: No response from server"
So u have to register DC SRVs into DNS.

Ok

How did u check DC using nslookup ?
SET Type = SRV
and then
nslookup _ldap._tcp.<DNSDomainName>
?

Make sure you have the following records in the DNS server :-
http://www.petri.co.il/active_directory_srv_records.htm

If not then import all SRV records from \WINNT\System32\Config\Netlogon.dns file.

Hey.. It works!!!!!

The was the DNS all along.  For this problem, just have to recreate the zone again.

You're my hero!  I can now go back and kiss my wife and kids.  Comtemplating suicide is out of order now. :)

Btw, what time is it there? Don't you sleep? :P

Much thanks and appreciate your help a lot.  Now to tackle the IIS and Exchange Server later..... *sigh*

Hi

Just to add you need to have a reverse lookup zone configured in dns on the server to use nslookup - create one - use the wizard and just add the first 3 octects of your network address - ensure it accepts dynamic up dates -
