\\computer1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

From one single computer on my network, I cannot get to another single computer on my network, I get the error:

\\computer1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon Failure: The  target account name is incorrect.

If I log in as ANY other user other than myself at ANY computer, including my own, I can get to the computer and its shares with no problem. I have checked the permissions on that computer I am trying to access and also the local policy settings on that computer and gave my user name full rights. I even added my domain account as a local machine administrator.

Help! What am I doing wrong??

Hi there.

There's two types of permissions when sharing resources. I'm assuming you're using Windows 2000 or XP. That being said, there's Share Permissions, and then the NTFS or File/Folder Permissions.

If I'm sharing a folder called MyFiles on computer1, I would need to check both sets of permissions. You could do this by RIGHT CLICKING on the "MyFiles" folder from the computer it resides on. You should have a Sharing tab that contains a button that reads "Permissions." That would be the Share Permissions. You'd also have another tab that read "Security." That would be the NTFS or File/Folder Permissions.

Have you checked to ensure both sets of permissions provide permissions to the resources you are trying to access? If my Share Permissions are more restrictive, and my File/Folder Permissions allow me access, I might not be able to access because the Share Permissions are preventing access.

Give that a try and let us know what you find.

The computer I am trying to access has Windows 2000 and my computer has Windows XP. I have checked both the share permissions and the security tab and made sure that my domain account AND the group I am in (Domain Admins) are both given full access. I even checked the box to reset all permissions on the files and folders of the share I am trying to get to. The drive itself is also shared giving me and domain admins full access. I even tried unchecking the "inherit permissions" and that did not work either.

Hi again.

This article below suggests that this error message is generated when:

"This problem may occur when the security channel is broken. The security channel is a communication session that a computer uses to communicate with its domain controller."

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830069

The article applies if you have a Windows 2000 Server. Does this apply in your scenario? If so, maybe this article will provide further insight into solving the issue.

Good luck!

I run Server 2003 but I will look into the article and let you know if it helps.

Thanks

If other usernames work from your machine, but your username does not, it almost sounds like "the security channel is broken." If that's the case, an easy fix might be to create yourself a new username. Is that an option?

I tried the fix you suggested but it did not work. I did the following from our main DC

1.      At the command prompt, type nltest /SC_CHANGE_PWD:<DomainName>, and then press ENTER.

Note Type the name of the domain where the computer account is kept instead of the <DomainName> placeholder.
2.      Type netdom reset <ComputerName> /domain:<DomainName>, and then press ENTER.

Note Type the local computer name instead of the <ComputerName> placeholder. Type the name of the domain where the computer account is kept instead of the <DomainName> placeholder.
3.      Restart your computer.

After step 2 it told me that the security channel had been reset and that the computer had been connected to a different DC. I restarted the computer and this time when I tried to access the computer I am trying to get to and it took a long time (20-40 seconds) before coming back to tell me that I did not have access to the share.

Looks like none of the above apply to me. nbtstat -n on both computers shows both the domain and the computer. dcdiag on both servers comes back with no errors at all. I disjoined my computer from the domain and rejoined it and that did not work. I figured out that it was not my account that was doing it because if I log in with my account to another computer, I can access what I need on the other computer with no problem. SOOOoooo....I gave up. I moved my profile on my computer to a backup folder and recreated my user on my computer. Now, everything works fine other than having to redo all my settings like Outlook, IE, all my programs and what not. But, I am able to get to that computer which was critical.

Thanks brownmetals for the help.
