There are many programs that will not function properly without local admin access. I have had similar issues with medical programs deployed at the college campus I work at. I too, had to add them to the local administrators group on the machine in order for them to be able to use the program, however, I implemented strict group policy settings to override any additional administrative features that may have granted them...like denying Control Panel, preventing wallpaper changes, etc.
So the answer is...yes...it can have MANY adverse effects, if ytou do not take time to set upo additional security measures.

Well, what local group did you add them to?
If to the administrators group - then they can go wild with settings on their local system.
It depends on the group...
