Question

IP addresses changing themselves from DHCP assigned to 192.168.0.7

Asked by: heartlander

Here's the setup...

Linksys RV082 router acting as a DHCP server. One Windows 2003 SBS server and 10 workstations.

A few days ago one of the workstations lost connectivity with the network. It 'did' have an IP address assigned by the router (192.168.1.XXX). When I checked it's address it was at 192.168.0.7.  The person at the workstation told me this happend right after a power outage, and this PC was not on a UPS. Ok...so strange things happen I thought...I manually assigned it to 192.168.1.YYY and it was back on the network and working fine.

Today, same thing (minus the power supply) on a different workstation. Lost connection to the network, found the IP set to 192.168.0.7. Manually assigned it a good IP (192.168.1.222) and it's back on the network.

Of coures these are the most critical workstations<g>.  Any ideas???

Thanks,

John

Are you sure that you only have one DHCP server running? Try IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then IPCONFIG /REFRESH what IP address gets assigned ?

it seems to me too as if you were running DHCP server both on the router and the SBS server. Then if a DHCP broadcast comes form a workstation to obtain an IP adress the first (or the quickest) DHCP server responds. i would recomend you to disable the DHCP on the router and setup the IP adress pool on the SBS server.

It is my experience that if another device runs a DHCP server then the one on the SBS2003 will not start. Is there another device that may be running a DHCP server ?
