Question

XP users can not login: error 0x00000BB

Asked by: jkrabben

We are running a Windows 2003 Standard edition server with about 20 workstations running win2k and XP. I upgraded three workstations to WinXP and after the upgrade all XP workstations were no longer able to log in. The login error said there was an authentication issue and referenced  0x00000BB. I enabled Kerberos logging and the following error is being logged:

Event ID 3

Any help will be greatly appreciated as these folks are quickly losing patience with me and this network.  (My first week on the job).

Thanks in advance.

Turns out the issue had nothing to do with the servers. In digging deeper I found that none of the worksattions had any updates and most did not have any anti-virus protection. Of the ones that did the AV software was either not functioning or never updated. After cleansing all systems the network moved right into the correct step.

Thanks for the comment AJ!

I will ask for this to be closed

Hi,
Found the problem with Kerbeors.dll ( locate to %systemroot%\system32 ) renamed to kerbeors.old and restart system. System will create a New Kerberos.dll file. Now it should work fine.

Thanks,

Have you applied any WSUS updates to your client PCs. I had a similar issue and tied it back to a Kerberos error

netdiag /v >netdiag.txt look for kerberos ticket errors specifically
and of course any other errors that might relate on one of the XP machines giving issues

In this website you can find a lot of information regarding the Kerberos:

Same problem. Computer was infected with LANDO.A trojan which affected the winlogin.exe.
Gained access to computer by rebooting and login as local admin.
Ran CCleaner, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and a full AV scan.
