Remote Desktop via VPN Name Resolution Issues

I have something odd happening on our network.  We have one (only) Windows 2004 Server SP4 running a domain.  It also does DHCP, DNS and RRAS.  

For awhile users have been able to VPN into the network from home and then use Remote Desktop on their computers here at work.

They can still do that but recently, and I can't figure out what changed, they can no longer put in their computer name for Remote Desktop.  It still works with an IP address but not the name.

Any ideas?

sounds like WINS or DNS issue. I would use the nslookup to checlk the DNS status. Or check this web page for more details,

Yes, I assume it is a WINS or DNS issue.  I'll try that Monday but should add that the names resolve at work.  In other words, you can use remote desktop from one computer to the another using the computer's name while at the office but can only use IP addresses when offsite and coming in via VPN.

I read the chicagotech posting and logged in remotely to check some things.  I learned that I can log in with the FQDN but not the computer name.  RRAS uses DHCP to assign VPN addresses and the DHCP server has dept.company.com for its 015 option.  If I use computername.dept.company.com (the FQDN), I can use Remote Desktop.  What am I missing here?

I know I can set suffixes on each computer but don't want to do that if possible.  I'd like a server oriented solution.

1. on the VPN client, use nslookup to check the DNS status. Make sure you are assign the remote DNS.

2. I believe that the chicagotech.net web site also mentions that you can use lmhost too.

I never got just a computer name to work but the FQDN works and since I am contract, the owner says that is good enough.
