Need to understand security issues using Remote Web Workplace and Remote Desktop with Small Business Server

We are in the process of transferring from a peer-to-peer network to Small Business Server 2003. Remote Desktop and Remote Web Workplace offer some nifty possibilities and we would like to use them, but we are nervous about opening ports, having heard scary things about intruders being able to get into the network using them.

We are a small office, don't have any DOD contracts or links to anybody's huge bank account, but we do want to feel our client data and business data is secure.

Our SBS help files do not say much about security, other than to tell us to trust their wizards.

My general question is, how can we be reasonably sure we are secure? We understand that would-be hackers can search for open ports, but what do they do once they find them? And are there other specific issues to be aware of in allowing remote access? Some of the information I've seen suggests that Remote Web Workplace is more secure than Remote Desktop. Since you have to open even more ports to use Remote Web Workplace, what makes it more secure?
