Browse All TopicsUser used to be connected to a domain controller called kheserver. The user synchronized a network drive to his laptop for offline use. He moved to a remote location and continued to log into the domain, even though it was not physically
available to him. He kept logging in with a cached set of credentials. This
goes on for 8 months; during that time he continually updated the offline
folder with new data. During this time the DC had problems & we installed a new one & called it Avocado.
I just joined his laptop to the domain in the office where he works. This
instantly created a problem of him not being able to access his offline
files. He can browse to their original network location
\\server\home\username and see's them all as synchronized and available.
However, he can't access any of them, or copy them to a new location as he
is logging into the computer as a different account on an entirely different
domain.
Facts:
The files are there.
The attributes cannot be changed.
I see no way to take ownership of the files, I'm sure this is by design of
Windows for security reasons.
The original domain is no longer available to connect to.
What can I do?

You should log in to his laptop as an Domain Admin.
Then go to c:\documents and settings <to the folder where you see the users name followed by the domain name.
There is where his files are.
Take ownership of all those files / and subdirs. <-- As Jay Jay said a domain admin has always the right to take ownership (or check your gpo's when taking ownership dont work, you might have a company policy that has a special account for that purpose and which is carefully audited because of privacy reasons or a very uptight board)
And give the this user full rights for now and dom admin.
On the server do the same.
Now you can log off his laptop.
The user can log in and the files with the new security are synced with the server, and then the user should be able to access all his files.

with the domain admin account can you not copy to a new location? this has happened because the computer account has a new SID
