New Laptop dosn't see shared drives on another PC

we (Youth for Christ) have a XP Home PC (server) that has shared drives on it and  3 other XP Pro PCs that can access these drives with no problem.  they just got a new Dell Laptop and tried everthing i can think of as well as some of the suggestion on your site to get it to map or see the shared drives.  at first i could only ping the gateway (DSL with netgear hubs) after installing peer-to-peer i can ping the server and another PC on the network.   i have turned off firewalls and norton, etc.  any ideas?  i am trying to help them out.
