Question

Seperate VLANs cannot get IP

Asked by: jgusman

I have a Westell B90 Router that is conected to a Cisco 2900 Switch. I have two VLANs 1 and 5. I have a server that is handing out the IP Addresses. VLAN 1 is my native. If I connected a device and try to make it on to VLAN 5, it will not pull an IP. I tried doing the IP Helper address, but I am still unsuccessful.

If I connect the PC to a VLAN 1 port, it works fine.
On the PC, I have two DHCP pools created.

What VLAN is the router in?

by: keith_alabasterPosted on 2007-05-07 at 11:39:32ID: 19044862

If you give the pc a static ip/mask/gateway on the vlan 5 subnet, can it ping the router etc ok?
Can it ping the ip of the dhcp server (presume that is on vlan 1).
I have not even heard of Westell so limited on that side in respect to assistance.

The router is on VLAN 1, but it is not sending the DHCP, a server is doing that. WIN2003 server. No, if I assign a static, it still cannot ping.

Make sure the routes on the router are correct, and that it passes dhcp requests

If the Server and the PC's are on the same switch, would this matter? It is a CIsco 2924 to be exact.  So, the server is connected to port 24, the router is connected to port 1 and the rest of the systems down the line. So the DHCP requests are not going through the router, correct? or would they still go through the router?

This is all on a single LAN setup, the router has a WAN, but thats only for internet traffic.

woah.

The switch ports are on different vlans's aren't they? This means that any traffic from vlan 1 needs to go to the router and back to get to vlan 5. If you want the devices on each port to talk together they need to be on the same vlan OR have the router 'route the traffic between the vlans.

by: jgusmanPosted on 2007-05-07 at 12:18:16ID: 19045193

Yes, several of the switchports are on VLAN 1 that is the server and 4 of the other ports including one for the router, the rest are on VLAN 5. Everything on VLAN1 communicates fine, but everything on VLAN 5 cannot talk.

by: adamdrayerPosted on 2007-05-07 at 12:18:52ID: 19045198

Yeah, if you can't ping, then you don't have routing setup correctly between the VLANs.  You need to configure the segments to use the router for inter-VLAN communication.  You may even want to make the router the default gatway depending on your setup.

Try statically configuring a computer on VLAN 5 and specify the router as the default gateway.  See if you can then ping any of the computers on VLAN 1

<<If you give the pc a static ip/mask/gateway on the vlan 5 subnet, can it ping the router etc ok?>>

Tried that one Adam. Its got to be the lack of routing on the router.

Thanks :)

yeah, i just thought maybe he wasn't putting the router as the default gateway, so packets destined for the other VLAN were not making it to the router.  I still don't think its gonna work, because what he's really trying to do here is a router on a stick, which isn't something that you can just plug in and go.  You need to configure that switchport with the roter a certain way.

Agreed - there must be an equivalent of the trunk port option.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the only issue here is the Router on a Stick methodology doesnt work when using a Westell. Its a cheaper router (worse than a linksys) and doesnt have much configuration. I was hoping that there was more I could do on the switch. :-(
