Why use c$ when mapping a drive with microsoft products

When mapping a drive form a microsoft PC to a microsoft windows 2003 server the server admin types in c$ in the path.  I can't find anything for windows saying to use this and am wondering what it means.  I can map a drive just using \\servername\sharename. Would like to know what this does \\servername\c$\sharename is how it's being done.

C$ Is a hidden share. I would map shares like you state. \\servername\sharename.

The c$ allows one to map the root of the C drive. Administrators should only be given that right. The best practice for sharing computer files/locations, is to setup a folder share \\servername\foldername
