The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

FILE REDIRECTION - ROAMING PROFILES PROPER SETUP PROCEDURE ASSISTANCE NEEDED

Asked by T_Trainer in Windows Networking, Windows 2003 Server

Tags: roaming, folder, profiles, redirection

I am looking for some clarification on Folder Redirection and Roaming Profiles.  I am by no means a expert on networking so bear with me please.  I have Server 2003 R2 running w/AD.  On the client side the machines are all running XP Pro.  I have both the Redirection and Roaming Profiles in place and running, however I have a couple of strange things taking place.

On the client machines, all the desktop information is stored in the users individual desktop folder on the local machine.  When the machine joins the domain and I log the user into the server, a new folder is created on the local machine with the UserName.DomainName, which naturally contains none of the users desktop icons or documents. Is this normal, I would have thought the existing user files would be the default? All the folders are created on the server within the Shared Profiles and Shared Users folders as I would expect, with the exception of the second part to the question.

On the local machine under the UserName.DomainName folder, the My Documents folders are all created with the same user name (mine).  In other words, I log on the user JJones@Domain.com.   The users folder JJones.Domain.com is created and with it is the usual Desktop, Start Menu, Favorites etc folders but the Documents folder has the name SSmiths Documents.

Bottom line, my ultimate goal is to move the existing my docs and desktops from the individual machines to the server.  This will allow me to perform backups in a much simpler fashion as well as secure the data.  As well we are looking for the ability for users to be able to log on to any machine and have access to their files and desktops.  All the machines are set up with all the same software, individual users may have customized their desktops a bit.

I have followed the Step by Step guides from Microsoft but I think I am missing something somewhere and would appreciate any assistance.
