If your computer has 2 ethernet ports you can use it as a bridge with XP's built-in connection sharing. Or, same if you're using dialup: PPP<->computer<->ethernet<
Otherwise the money spent on a router is far cheaper than the time spent configuring a proxy server.
Unless you just want the experience, in which case you'll figure out that 2nd statement for yourself, eventually. :-)
