We have a laptop that has had a number of viruses/spyware issues that we have managed to unwind to the point where the laptop is functional now. Laptop is running Windows XP Home Edition, SP2.
There is one issue thats now bugging us - with our ethernet cable plugged in we're unable to connect to the LAN - its stuck 'Acquiring a Network Address'. The computer is also really slow in starting up and judging by other people with similar problems, that may be related in this case, although we're putting in more RAM as well, as its currently only got 256MB.
Further investigation shows that ipconfig doesn't work - I get the message:
Windows IP Configuration
An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specifed. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unable to query host name.
In services the DHCP Client service is at 'Starting' status - but it never changes from that.
