Question

Asked by: pinaldave

I have a router/modem with IP address. (Which has internal IP address as 192.168.1.1)

Now cable modem has cable going into wireless router.(Which has internal IP address as 192.168.15.1)

I have computer on my network with IP address as 192.168.15.99 with is joined with wireless router.

Now the setting is like this :
Modem/Router (192.168.1.1) ---> wireless router (192.168.15.1) ---> Computer (192.168.15.99)

How can I set up my routers that when I have request to connect on cable modem/router's live IP it forwards the remote desktop request to my computer?

The modem/router needs to be set one of two ways:
 1) forward port 3389 to the wireless router 192.168.1.?
 2) changed from NAT mode to bridged mode
The wireless router needs to be configured to forward port 3389 to the PC 192.168.15.99

by: RobWillPosted on 2008-05-05 at 19:58:31ID: 21504463

PS- The following link is quite helpful with the actual port forwarding configuration of various routers. If you can find your unit/s on the linked page it will detail the specifics for port 3389.
http://www.portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopindex.htm

If you want to use the "bridge" option, which would be my preference, please provide the make and model of the modem/router and we may be able to provide specifics for the conversion to bridge mode.

Which router should be configured to bridged mode.
Wireless or modem/router?

I have cable router SmartAX MT882 how to convert it to bridge mode or
I have NetGear WGR614 how to convert it to bridge mode?

by: RobWillPosted on 2008-05-05 at 20:00:53ID: 21504472

The unit that is a combined modem and router should be set to bridge mode. This effectively makes it a basic modem.

I'll see if I can come up with the details for doing so on your unit.

Rob thank you very much for guiding me. Waiting for further details.

The only information I could find on converting the SmartAX MT882 to bridge mode was the following link starting at the bottom of page 13. You likely want Bridged + DHCP mode.
http://www.talktalkmembers.com/images/downloads/manuals/SmartAXMT882_ADSL_Router_User_Manual.pdf

The other option would be as per suggestion 1, configure port forwarding on the MT882 as per:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Huawei/SmartAX-MT882/Remote_Desktop.htm
and then configure port forwarding on the Netgear as per:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WGR614/Remote_Desktop.htm
