Lonely workstation can't find network it should be on

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, 2000, Networking
Hello!

At my office we have one server (with Windows Server 2000) and 6 wired workstations (with Windows 2000 Pro).

We are having problems adding one of the workstations to the network (it's hard drive crashed, so a new one had to be put in, thus it's starting from scratch).

Everything I've done to try to map the network drive to recognize that workstation through the workstation itself has been unsuccessful. ItI just can't find the server and other computers in it's network neighborhood. Under the network neighborhood it does show the domain, but when I click on the plus sign next to it, instead of bringing down the list of computers in the domain, the plus sign simply disappears.  On all the OTHER computers, clicking on the plus sign does bring down the list of computers attached to it (Server, Ws1, Ws2, Ws4, Ws5, Ws6 and some weird thing called "<ourcompanyname>dm-334534534").  The domain name is <ourcompanyname>-dm.  As you can see, Ws3 is not on the list.  And that is, of course, the computer having trouble finding the other computers.

Ws3 does see the internet which comes through the server to the other computers. And some rep from Peachtree (our accounting program) somehow managed to get this workstation to find the Peachtree on the server.  So, it IS seeing the server I would guess, but it doesn't show it in the network neighborhood.

Our office thought all was well until we discovered we couldn't "add a printer" to it that is coming off Ws5, as the wizard can't find any of the other computers or server.

Oddly, though, there is a printer attached to this workstation (Ws3) which all the other computers CAN access, even though when I look at the network neighborhood on other computers, the troubled workstation (Ws3) doesn't show up on the list.   (Server, Ws1, Ws2, Ws4, Ws5, Ws6" and the weird name).

Any advice on what I may be missing in going about adding the Ws3 to the network which, I am guessing, has to be done before I can get all the other computers to show up (including the one with the printer I want to add) on Mr. Ws3's add-a-printer list would be appreciated.

To me it all doesn't make sense for it not to show up as part of the network and yet the other computers can see it's printer and use it, and it can see the accounting files in the server.  And even if the Ws3 somehow got renamed with the weird name, how would that prevent it from seeing all the other computers in the network neighborhood, thus making me unable to add the printer from Ws5?  I think my brain is starting to hurt.

And under the network neighborhood in the other computers, no other domain name is listed other than the one I mention above, so I don't think the Ws3 just got placed in a different workgroup.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much!!

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is.
