The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Pinging a computer redirects the ping back to this computer?

Asked by JimR123b in Windows Networking, Microsoft Windows Operating Systems

I've recently bought a new iPhone 3G, and so have had to install the latest version of iTunes on my desktop computer.

As well as my desktop computer (running Vista Ultimate x32), I have a "media server" which is basically a normal PC running Windows XP Professional.

I am using a BT Home Hub as my wireless router. Both my server and my desktop are connected to a wireless bridge, which in turn is connected to my wireless router.

The problem is this...

Since installing iTunes on my desktop computer, I have had intermittent problems with accessing my server from my desktop PC. I don't know if it's iTunes causing the problem, but it seemed to happen immediately after installing iTunes.

If I try pinging the server by entering "ping 192.168.1.75" at a command-line prompt. Strangely, the result is something like:

Pinging 192.168.1.75 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.80: Time out
Reply from 192.168.1.80: Time out
Reply from 192.168.1.80: Time out

That's not exactly the message that comes up, as I can't remember exactly what it says, but hopefully you get the point... I ask it to ping 192.168.1.75, and it instead pings 192.168.1.80, it seems.

I should probably point out that 192.168.1.75 is the server, and 192.168.1.80 is the desktop. So, when trying to ping the server from the desktop, the desktop actually tries to ping itself! It seems as if something is intercepting the IP address, and diverting it back to the computer its running on!

There's two things that puzzle me:

1. Why is my ping to .75 diverted to .80?
2. Why does it fail to ping .80 when that is the computer I am pinging from?

Can anybody please tell me what is going on?!?

Please feel free to ask questions about my setup, if you like. Many thanks for any help...
