Question

Unable to join fresh install of Windows XP to domain

Asked by: broadway69

We had a PC which was unable to join the domain.  The company wanted to machine wiped anyway as they suspected the employee was up to something before she was fired.  So I wiped the machine and installed XP and all pertinent updates.  Still received the error "A domain controller for the domain example-domain could not be found."

I am at a loss for what to do here?  The DNS settings are correct, pointing the the server, and I can ping the domain-name.com from the client PC.

Any suggestions?

DHCP or Static?  I've had an issue where even though I was getting a DHCP address it still wouldn't join so I statically entered everything in and it worked after that.

I tried it both ways.  There is a Cisco 2801 acting as firewall, dhcp/router.

Recently I manually configured the DNS, WINS to point to the server LAN IP, this is how it is currently configured.

Add a Computer Account on the AD and while joining the Domain use the Netbios name of the Domain instead of the FQDN.

by: broadway69Posted on 2009-03-20 at 12:38:35ID: 23943095

How do I confirm what the netbios name is.  I know it defaults to first 15 of domain name but don't know if was altered.  Also, the domain controller ends in .int instead of .local; does that matter?

what is the FQDN of your domain controller ?

DC.mycompany.int?

you could just use "mycompany"

by: broadway69Posted on 2009-03-20 at 12:42:32ID: 23943150

mycompany.int

I had added the computer name to the AD, of course, now I'm unable to delete it.  Give me an error about not being able to find the object.

can u post a screen shot of the error?

Below is the details on the error I get when trying to join the domain.  Is that what you meant?

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain chatham-partners:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.chatham-partners

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

chatham-partners
. (the root zone)

After reinstalling that computer, you should have deleted the computer account in Active Directory. Then join again.

I used a different computer name though.  True as that might be however there has to be a fix.

run netdiag /fix from your dc controler and try again see if that gets it going again.
