Question

workgroup is not accessible

Asked by: gdemaria

I am running windows XP Pro in my home office network.

When I click on View WorkGroup Computers, I get the following error message:

<workgroupname> workgroup is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network

When I choose "My Network Places" the folder is completely empty except for "My Web Sites on MSN"

I've read a lot about this on the web, but haven't found a solution yet
Thanks for any help!

Make sure file and printer sharing is enabled on the machines. Also, for testing purposes, disable all firewalls to eliminate that as the possibility.

Check that the Computer Browser, DNS Client, DHCP Client, NetLogon and Network Connections services are set to Automatic and are started. Check this by going to Start, Run, type "services.msc" (no quotes) <hit enter>.

@and,  I did this.  NetLogon was not started, when I started it, it stopped again and presented a message that some servers automatically stop when the have no work to do.  I believe that is used for a Domain, I am using a workgroup.

The others were up and running.

Thanks

same error, but do you think I need to reboot?

Netlogon should not start and stop like that - even for a workgroup PC. Check the Event Viewer (Start, Run, type "eventvwr" <hit enter) for any errors that correspond to the service starting and stopping, and list them here.

Did you create the same user list on all computers that you want to access in the workgroup? If it's a peer-to-peer network with Windows XP you must have the same user list on all computers in the workgroup and they must have the SAME username AND password on all the computers.

by: gdemariaPosted on 2009-07-20 at 14:32:06ID: 24899274

@premillard, that's a good tip, thank you.  I suspect that some users are not on all PCs.  I do know that at least my account is the same, however.

The curious thing here is that the network area is empty, it does not even list the workgroup name.   I only get the error, so I am thinking I am not getting far enough to even see if the user account matches.

The error you reported: "The server {1F87137D-0E7C-44D5-8C73-4EFFB68962F2} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." may be significant.

can any of the other computers see each other or the workgroup? I'm trying to get a better understanding of the issue. Is it just an issue with the one computer or a workgroup problem or possibly a combination of the two.

by: gdemariaPosted on 2009-07-20 at 15:01:01ID: 24899528

Just tried it on another computer... I am getting the same error on that PC as well.   I had not gotten that before (but I haven't checked for a long while), so I thought it was just this computer.  So, both computers are giving this error...

my previous post doesn't seem to have gone through so my appologies if this posts twice. can any of the other computers see each other or the workgroup? I'm trying to understand if it's just an issue with this one computer, the workgroup or possibly a combination of the two.

@premillard, got your post, see answer above..  multiple computers give the same error, unable to access work group.  Thanks!

Just want to find out, can the workstations ping each other? Can you access the other workstations by running "\\computername" ?

by: premillardPosted on 2009-07-21 at 08:07:34ID: 24905393

1. Could you send a quick network diagram? Rough sketch is fine.
2. Sorry for the obvious but I have to ask. The name of the workgroup on all the computers is exactly the same right? ie. "WORKGROUP"
3. Do you have another computer that you could swap one out with or is it possible to do a factory restore on one of the computers?
4. Are all of your Windows updates up to date and what about antivirus updates are they all up to date as well? Does your computer allow you to get the lastest updates? If everything is connected up properly I'd almost start wondering if you don't have some sort of malware. Try running all of your updates.

The diagram if fairly simple.  I have 4 computers, two of them go into a switch and then into a wall jack.  The other two go directly into wall jacks.  All wall jacks end up going into the same firewall/routers (Verizon FIOS).   All computers have the same workgroup name.

I will be rebuilding one of the PCs at some point, perhaps I can do that sooner than later but it may take me several days before I can clear it out.   The computer I am working on is only a few months old with a clean install from Dell of windows XP Pro.

I have Macafee (full suite) and Spyware doctor both running and scanned with no issues found.  I have auto updates set so I assume I am up-to-date.

I am unable to ping at least two of my other computers, I can ping one, the other is not on.

Amazingly, I have found this issue on the web many, many times. Each time with a different resolution. It's baffling. Here are some of the things that people said worked.

> I had this problem and the only way I found to resolve it was to put all the comps on a totally new workgroup and redo my DNS server. When they came back on I could browse the entire group.

double click the above and "add use or group".

Are the 2 workstations that can ping each other the ones plugged into the switch?

actually, they're not..

The last item I tried (the 6 step at the end of my previous post) actually did a little something.  Now when I go into network places, I can at least see my own PC.  Before, I saw nothing.    Does that solution make any sense to you?   I'm not sure what it was that I did :)

Here is what I would do before you restore any of the computers.
1. Plug all the computers into the same switch and fire them up
2. Make sure they all have the same user list if you haven't done that yet
3. Check the IP addresses of each of the computers including the subnet mask and the
default gateway and make sure they are all correct
4. See which computers can ping each other and which ones can't
5. Check if the ones that can ping each other can browes the workgroup
Start with that and please post the results

Number 6 of your post?

by: premillardPosted on 2009-07-21 at 09:30:55ID: 24906517

If so that was going to be the next step I was going to have you do after posting these results.
Did you add all of the computers to the host file? IP's and corresponding computer name?

I was referring to these steps (below)...

I followed these steps and can now see my own computer on the network places, but no other computers.

I did not try the suggestion of adding to the host, it didn't sound like something that would make a difference since I cannot access the other computers by IP either, so adding to host probably wouldn't do anything.

I will try your 5 step suggestion above.  Thanks for sticking with me.

> 1. Open Network Connections.
2. In Local Area Network, Right click on top of your connection and select Properties, click Install.
3. In Select Network Component Type, click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, click OK, and then click Close.
5. In Network Connections, on the Advanced menu (on top menu bar), click Advanced Settings.
6. On the Adapters and Bindings tab, under Connections, click the local area connection on which you are enabling IPX/SPX file and print sharing.
Under Bindings for Local Area Connection, under File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, clear the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box, and then click OK."

Oh, I'm afraid this will take you down the wrong path. You are going to need TCP/IP enabled.
This isn't/shouldn't be that difficult of a task, there's something really easy that's being missed.
To put you at ease I'm a network engineer and I build/Maintain very complex WAN's.
Post the results from my steps and I should be able to help you get this thing up.

No problem, I'll just wait to hear back.

I spent much of today reworking my network.  I took out all wires and cleaned-up, moved the switch I was using, changed my workgroup name to the default "workgroup,"  undid the network change I made above, clicked "repair" on the network connections and when I tested, things were working !
