Question

Win XP slow to open network files...

Asked by: dsanderlin

We have 3 Win XP Pro workstations that are taking 30+ seconds to open/save any network file e.g. word, excel, ppt, pdf files.  There are around 25 workstations here and these are the only ones being slow opening files from any server.  Opening files directly from an app e.g. Word or Excel open just fine.  Sometimes saving gives a "path too deep" type error.

They are connected by a cisco 10/100mb switch.  I changed their individual connections from Auto-Neg to 100mb/full.  This made no difference.  We also did virus and spyware scans with no results.

I restarted and logged in to the workstations as domain admin.  The files still opened slow so I assume it's not a profile issue.

Suggestions?  Thanks!

Could it be the swtich they are plugged into mabye going bad any way you can move them to a diffrent switch ? Or d oyou have a long cable you run it to another network port near by that is in a diffrent switch to test if the switch is going ?

Do those 3 machines have the same antivirus settings us the other 25 ?

I've moved each from an older 3com switch to the same Cisco.  They had the same results.  I then moved them to different ports on the cisco just to try combinations.

They all have Symantec End Point Protection.  The dates are current for the AntiVirus and the Proactive Threat Protection.  I did notice that the AntiVirus date was one day behind mine but that may not be relevant.

I've seen this happen many times when you have (In folder options/View) "Automatically search for network folders and printers" checked. Uncheck that and see if it still takes that long.

I changed the options by unchecking "automatically search for network folders..." and then selected Apply to all Folders.  The files still take 30+ seconds to open - even a 14k text file.

I did notice that when I right-clicked on a network file to view properties it took the 30+ seconds to display the right-click option list.  It sat with an hour glass until the list appeared.

As another test I moved a problem pc into another ( working ) office and it had the same issue.  It appears the problem is within the pc's and not the network port.  I tried a windows xp repair and applying a restore point from before they noticed the issue.   It had the same results.

A few questions:
Does this happen on other profiles? Log in with admin profile and see if the same thing happens

Does this happen if you manually change the DNS server? Try using the router/firewall as dns (if your network can work that way)

Is there a different antivirus software on these compared to the rest?

Are these 3 computers in their own separate AD Group?

by: dsanderlinPosted on 2009-08-19 at 14:53:05ID: 25137738

Hello - thanks for your suggestions.  Today I tried several things.  It still happens when logged in under the Administrator account.  I also tested renaming the user's profile and creating a new one.

They are all on the same Symantec EndPoint Protection version and updates.  Yes, they are all in the same AD Group.  Today I tested removing one of the workstations from the domain, deleting the computer from AD & DNS and then added it back in.  It had the same results.

Following some research I also noticed that some apps were installed from a server which is no longer running.  I noticed the old server name in the registries under uninstalls.  I turned the old server back on hoping the workstations may have been looking for the old server for some reason and timingout...It didn't help but I thought it was a good idea...

Thanks for all of your help.  I'm thinking that I may just need to wipe and reinstall windows at this point.

Are they static or dhcp? did anyone manually set the dns? Check if it's wrong. Also, make sure the computers are up to date with their network drivers. Other than that I'd prabaly reformat/reinstall than waste much more time also.
