Question

Internet Connection Sharing Problem...

Asked by: JatinHemant

Hi friends !

I am facing a very serious and strange problem. You see, I am running an internet cafe and subscribed Wireless Broadband from ISP.

My ISP gave me one public IP address and so to distribute it among all internal 15 PCs, I installed second NIC and used "Internet Connection Sharing" on my Public NIC card.

Now, All client PCs are set to receive TCP/IP settings automatically as ICS needs this setting. I get internet connection successfully. But the serious problem is that:

The connection to server resets after sometime automatically and I don't get internet on my internal PCs. I receive the following screen that I have attached.

Then, I have to give "repair" command to repair the card on those internal PCs, and then I get internet and sometime even doing repair does not work. Then I have to uninstall the card and then install it back and then it works.

You see, this is a very bad situation when clients are doing internet and such problems occur.

When I ping to ISP gateway from my ICS Server, the ping is successful and so there is no problem from ISP end. The problem is internal.

For me, I am CCNA certified and have worked as an Network Administrator in an organization for more than 3 years. I configured Routers, Switches and so I can say that I have at least intermediate understand of how computer network works.

But, surprisingly, I am unable to solve this problem. Please help me to sort out this problem.

Regards.

I think your ICS service is problematic. Try tracert command when this problem occurs from your ICS server.

Also check the DHCP & ICS services while this problem arises?

Have you checked the power management settings for both the NICs in your ICS server?
This may be causing your ICS NICs to go in sleep mode after some time, causing disruption in the Internet Service to other Internal PCS.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,

Sarang

Dear Jatin Hemant!

It seems that the problem is with the setting of your LAN cards.

Specially the setting of lan card named 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.

1- Just go to control panel
2- network connections
3- right click the LAN card and go to properties
4- Then click on Configure or something like that (depends on win version)
5- Then click 'Power Management'
6- Uncheck 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'

This will solve the problem, because to save power OS shut off the power of some devices based on configurations.

I hope this will solve the problem.

Best Rgeards and good Luck

Yeah...it is working now.

You were right, the NIC card was going in sleep mode and I didn't even notice this setting.

I was knowing this before but I missed it and was just struggling. Thanks to all of you experts to bring me n the right track.

Regards

@ JatinHemant:

In future, if you do not not know how to carry out simple operations, do not boast of your CCNA qualifications and networking expertise, so that we will not make the mistake of assuming that when we ask you to check the power management settings for both the NICs in your ICS server that you'd know what to do.

@QuickSolution:
Did you not read my post before giving the same solution? Just adding the steps does not necessarily do any value addition.

Regards,

Sarang.

Hi Sarang !

Thanks for your suggestions. And, of courses, I will always try to practice them. Well...we all are human beings and not god and there is no human being who never does mistakes and who never forgets simple things. May be in your life also, you may have forgotten to take your mobile from home or forgotten an important work.

So, for me also, I did other troubleshootings but surprisingly did not notice that small problem. And that is all. So I thank you again that you brought that simple thing in my notice.

And I am not boasting because I know in today's context CCNA is just basic certification of entrance level

Regards.

@ JatinHemant:

All I'm saying is that when you told us that you have intermediate level knowledge of computer networks, I took it for granted that you'd know how to change these settings and did not give specific steps to achieve that.

My only objection is that the other expert responded almost 40 mins after me, gave the same solution, but only specified the steps, and gets his answer as Accepted, and I have to be content with an assisted solution. This I think is quite unfair, and hence the outburst.

Regards,

Sarang
