Question

Duplicate IP notification after reboot for Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE and NDIS!

Asked by: lanman777

We have two nics on our server. One has nothing plugged into it.
On a reboot it sees the second nic and then no on can log into the server.
It is a Windows 2003 SBS server and Dell 2900.
When I start investigating and go into network protocol settings and look at the IP configuration it says the Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE NDIS VBD client has a duplicate IP and I need to change the IP address of my primary nic. If I don't change it no one can login and I cannot ping the router from the server.
The work around was to remove the second nic from my hardware profile and then reinitialize my primary nic and we are good to go.
The second nic is set to DHCP and is not plugged into anything. Everytime we reboot this server it sees the second nic and loads the driver for it and we have the problem again.
Since this second nic is not plugged into anything is the best fix to go into hardware setup on the server an disable the nic?

Can you not disable it in device manager?

You may be able to team them and plug them both in.

You can disable it in bios.

However, this is not your problem. A client or other server has the same IP as your server. You will need to track it down and change it's IP. I don't recommend you changing a DC's IP address.

To find out who has that IP, go to the command prompt and type:

NBTSTAT -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

(where xxx... is the ip in question).

Also you might want to type:

NBTSTAT -r to flush the Netbios cache. That old nic may be seen in netbios cache.
