1.  Yes, Solarwinds' Orion is primarily a suite of Network Monitoring solution.

2.  Solarwinds' Orion has a plethora of functionality available throughout the various applications.  From my experience, most network administrators use it for monitoring the availability and performance of their network devices and other systems.

A Demo is available for download via the Solarwinds' website at http://www.solarwinds.com/products/orion/.

The software can be installed on Windows.  For testing purposes, a desktop OS would be fine on a workstation system.  In Production, a server-based system and resources would be more desirable to ensure adequate performance based on your individual requirements.

3.  Overall, it's a great tool and most companies find it worth the initial cost.  While others might prefer less expensive tools, typically found in the Unix/Linux world for low to no cost, the graphical interfaces and reporting capabilities of Orion make it well worth the investment.

Hope this helps...

Mike

It also has a couple of add on features such as the application monitor and netflow monitor.

The application monitor can be used to monitor the status of an an application.  Not that it is just up or down, but that it is actually responding to requests and it responds within a defined amount of time.  All you do is define/script a transaction and go.

The netflow option can be used to receive netflow data from any device that can provide it.  Netflow data is a summery of the type (http, ftp, telnet, ect.) of IP traffic, the volume of traffic, and between what hosts the traffic is flowing between.

It does not just monitor network devices (switches/routers/firewalls) it also monitor servers.  You can monitor CPU/Memory/Filesystem utilization on a server.  Ever have a file system fill up?  Well Orion can warn you when it gets to say 80% full.

For switches it can tell you when individual interface go up or down or when ping times exceed a threshold you set.

Mike,

1) It is a straight-forward installation (I mean just "double-clicking" the "EXE file") or need a certain configuration?

2) If need a certain configuration, what is it? Should we modify the Registry or no?
- It is appreciated if you could provide roughly the steps (if any)

3) Thank you

tjie

I have not used the demo.

The full blown product is a ".exe" install, but it does require database. It comes with a "lite" version of MS SQL server, or if you have a full blown copy of MS SQL server you can use it.  I'm not sure if it can use other databases.

As for network bandwidth, it really does not use a whole lot.  As with any network monitoring product it does use some as you can't get information from a network device without.  We have never looked to see how much it uses, as it would use the same amount as any other product doing the same thing.
