Question

connect from my desktop PC to the internet with my cell phone?

Asked by: lweinlan

I have a standard desktop PC with internal modem. Is it possible to connect my desktop PC to my Nokia 5160 cell phone in order to be able to browse the internet (using Internet Explorer) on my PC ? I do not need to have data or Email message displayed on my cell phone. I just need to access the internet from my home desktop PC using my cell phone. Can I just connect my PC standard modem to my cell phone using a special cable, and just dial in my current ISP and browse the web using my PC? Do I need more than just a cable? What is the hardware/software I need? Who manufactures the hardware/software?

Hi,
It depends on the hardware. I have a Samsung that is connected to the Internet without having to do or buy anything else.
Enjoy

You need a cable or infrared connection to your phone from your PC...

No modem is needed, the cellular phone is a modem itself, actually :)

When you'll get a proper cable to cennoct your phoney to the PC's COM port, you could work with it (cellular phone) as you usually work with modem.

That's it, it's a kind of proposed answer.

Regards,
wizzard.

First, before you think about cables or anything, is your phone DATA capable ??? If it isn't, there is no point you carrying on, it will never connect. If it is, one of the best cables to by is the Nokia Datasuite for your phone. Comes with all software and a data cable exactly for your model phone, costs around £100, but works with anything and everything.

Give it a try

The 5160 is not one of the phones I find listed as ready to connect with one of the cables mentioned above. You might want to look some more, but I think you will not find it. So, you can buy another phone (make sure you get one on the list, such as the Nokia 5110, 5130, 5190, 6110, 6130, 6138, 6150 or 6190

Or, you can get a modem designed to go with a mobil phone. For instance, the Ositech King of Clubs PCMCIA modem (about $155us) or the Ositech King of Hearts modem for about $225us. Either will connect to your Nokia 51XX or 61XX phone.

There are some other options, but nothing I have found that is less expensive.

Wait, I did just find a cable for the 5160.

It is a 3Com Megahertz Direct Connect Cell Cable, OEM# 3CNOKA6, NOK6 and it costs about $120us. Save you a few dollars anyway.

Forget what I said about that 3Com cable -- I am not sure what that cable does.

Where I live I don't get anything but slow dial-up. If I buy a cable like this for my Motorola v60 do I need any software to make this work?
