Question

J2ME: Problem in Connection to a URL

Asked by: mte01

Hey experts,

I have configured by my mobile phone (Nokia 6600) to have a WAP connection by my WSP, and I put a WML file (actually an HTML file with WML tags) in the root folder of the IIS, and I ran my PC on a real IP address, and my phone was able to view this file (via http://<server's ip adress>/<file name>)...This now means that WAP is working correctly since communication between the mobile phone and a PC running on a real IP address was done successfully. However, I have a J2ME program that connects to a URL via sockets (i.e socket://<ip address>:<port number>), when I tried the connection on the emulator it worked perfectly, but now when I am trying it on this mobile phone above to connect to a java server running on the PC above (which is on a real IP address), the connection is not being successfull.....the mobile phone is giving after a while: SymbianOS error = -33 (which means that it's timeouting after having tried several times to connect without success). I did some search on the internet and noticed this error occuring several times with some people, and I also checked the WAP settings on my phone and noticed that there is a proxy server in which I have to connect to, and I was wondering if the proxy server might have been the cause of the problem (since it may not allow a direct connection to the URL).....any help on solving this problem of connection???

Try to use a domain name instead of the IP.

I don't think that that would be the problem......as I said previously my phone was able to view a WML file that I have put on the IIS root of the PC (as I said previously I was able to acces it with the IP address and not the domain name as http://<server's IP ADDRESS>/<file name>)

>> I was wondering if the proxy server might have been the cause of the problem
Ok, It's wrong if your mobile through a proxy server to visit the socket server.
you'd better first see what is the proxy server means? if you use a a proxy server to connect some server, you must first connect to proxy server. when you successfully connected and verified by proxy server, and you must obey some specific proxy protocol(selected by proxy server) to send your real target server socket info; and proxy server will connect real server for you, and then proxy server will be man-in-the-middle. any things you send will be transfered to real server through proxy server, and vice versa.

If network gateway is not a proxy but a NAT/NATP server, you can just directly connect the real server and igoring any transfering details in the middle.

when use http protocol with a proxy server, you can just direct the real server ip, and http protocol implementaion will do proxy transfer automatic for you, so you can't see what's really happened in TCP socket based transfer process, but in socket connection, you must be clear to know.

If you're definitely being pumped through a proxy server, you may be required to authenticate. Typically, a proxy is there for just that reason - to stop use of the network for non-authenticated users. Your emulator probably makes a successful connection because it uses your desktop credentials. Additionally, authentication with a proxy server usually entails base32 encrypting your user/pass.

OK....I'll be using another MIDlet on this mobile phone to try to connect to a servlet via HTTP (because I can't currently bypass this proxy server) and I'll inform you of the results, and if you have any additional comments please do post them

Testing was done on a GPRS connection (that didn't use a proxy server), and the connection was successfull.......I think the difference was not becuase of the proxy server absence but because of the way the phone operator that I am dealing with operate WAP (maybe they oblige the user to have a GPRS connection in which WAP operates over - if he wants to open a direct connection with a server). I'll wait for any comments you experts would like to post before closing this question (and maybe opening a new one asking about the WAP-GPRS integration)

2- In your country Malaysia...when you use WAP over GPRS, do you need to have GPRS already enabled?? in which you are charged for each MB of usage

>> 1- I live in Lebanon (not included in your URL's list)
Maybe you can call up your operator customer support to ask about it?

>> 2- In your country Malaysia...when you use WAP over GPRS, do you need to have GPRS already enabled?? in which you are charged for each MB of usage

I'm using WAP over GPRS setting when i using wap browser to connect to wap site. Last time i'm facing a problem when i try to use WAP over GPRS in j2me to connect to internet and i slove the problem by change the GPRS profile. This message is copy from sony ericsson support forum "Many operators choose to have multiple APN's for WAP, MMS and general Internet connections (Vodafone in Sweden for example). When using the browser, the profile should be WAP. When Java apps access the internet, the profile should be Internet.
This means that the user has to manually change the default connection profile when switching between wap browsing, and using Java apps."

The GPRS charge in malaysia is 0.10 cent per 10kb.

The operator customer support in Lebanon (even the most technical people) cannot answer the question of why a java application cannot connect via the regular WAP settings

>>This message is copy from sony ericsson support forum .....

Great..that may be the answer...I'll be checking it....

It turns out tha there's nothing in the profile that you can change from WAP to internet...

I checked a sony-ericsson mobile that has WAP/GPRS access

The Internet Over GPRS setting is not come with the phone, and you need to call up the operator side to ask them send the setting to your phone.

Yes, I checked the settings that would be made for a new access point (which would be sent by the operator to be saved in these fields), and there is no such option.....
