What do you see in the in the log of the AP?

The fault threshold set for the degraded state has been exceeded.

When the fault is cleared, the following message displays: Retry Count rate is OK

Verify that the fault threshold is set correctly.

If the threshold is set correctly, review your network to determine the action necessary to clear the fault condition.

Thanks, but that very article is the reason I posted this question.

Here's the log for the last couple of hours.  Another of these errors occurred at 16:32.  It's not even mentioned in the log:

The threshold is set correctly and the error clears itself after a bit.  "Review your network . . ." mentioned in the article is more than a little vague.  What I'm looking for is an exact explanation/definition of this error and it's possible causes.  Is it a squirrelly AP or wireless NIC for example?  How do I track it down?

Thanks again for trying.

actually station 0016.6fbe.23e2 has some major problems. Do you have any other 802.11 network in the area around this AP? Looks like it's trying to associate itself with one of the networks and constantly fails. I have a pocket for this cases. If one of the clients becomes annoing I authenticate it by MAC and assign IP from the network VLAN without any routing, then trying to scan this station and figure out who it is and what it wants.

Hi,
If it is a NIC, you will surely find it in the wireless client report (search by mac - respecting the syntax).
Obviously,  this requires that the client tracking is turned on.

It may just be a PC that is at the end of the buidling and the user do not even notice it because he is using his docking station :-)

You may also want to re-run a site survey as the radio environment may have changed
I hope this helps

I would try swapping the config and installation location of this AP with another similar one that is known to not have problems...  Then if you still get the alerts you know its environmental and not hardware related...   Or have you already done this?

by: dbarr57Posted on 2007-09-25 at 08:57:22ID: 19956760

Thanks everyone!
"Station 0016.6fbe.23e2 has some major problems" - that's the MAC of the AP that's throwing the errors.  There are many 802.11 networks around it as the building is right next to a major residential area as well as office buildings.
I haven't tried swapping the AP and/or configuration yet.
Could this be some kind of break-in attempt?

by: llyquidPosted on 2007-09-25 at 10:42:36ID: 19957528

Could be,  or just some misbehaving wireless driver on linux..  I had a somewhat similar issue with laptop that was running unbuntu and there was a driver issue on the laptop that was causing errors on the AP and other stations to disconnect when the laptop wireless was trying to associate..

you should consider moving to WCS and wireless lan controllers..  WLSE never really got much momentum before LWAPP hit the scene...   These would do better at detecting scans and IPS..
