Question

I am trying to setup a belkin router for my wireless laptop and My laptop can't find the router

Asked by: Rcorn8559

Can't get my laptop to find the belkin router. My laptop has a built in wireless card. When I scan for wireless connections It says there is none available. I'm only five feet from the router. The router is connected directley to my cable service and my "desktop is connected to the router and connects to the internet ok". I have ip addres on my computer but none on my laptop.

Likely you need to go into the router's web-based management interface and enable its wireless functions (probably listed under 'wireless mode' with variables of A, B, G/B, Mixed, Disabled, and/or others), give it a unique SSID (to differentiate it from any others in the neighborhood) and broadcast it if you want the laptop to be able to 'see' it, and enable DHCP for wireless connections. Get it talking to the laptop first, then enable security (e.g. WEP or WPA). Once you have the connection securely setup on your laptop, you can even turn off the SSID broadcast but then the laptop probably won't connect to it automatically (i.e. you would have to select the wireless network from a list and tell it to connect).
If you need specific instructions, please include the router's exact model number and the laptop's OS.

Is this the first time you are trying to connect to a Wireless Connection?

Make sure that your built in Wireless Card's Radio is enabled, this can usually be achieved by a Function button on your keyboard or a toggle switch located on the front, back, or sides of your laptop.

The first rule in diagnostics is keeping it as simple as possible.

Is your Wireless radio turned on?  Are you able to view other Wireless networks at other locations?  Please answer this question so myself and other experts can proceed to follow the patterns in solving a problem.

Here is the solution center for that Router as well:

Please post back so we can begin diagnosing where the problem is coming from (Laptop or Router)

JJB-Zenful is right, you need to double check that the wireless adapter on your laptop is physically switched on. The manual that came with your laptop should tell you how to switch it on or off. What is the make and model of your laptop? someone here can probably tell you where the switch is, all laptops are different in this regard, sometimes it's a slider switch, or a press button switch, sometimes it's a hot key combination.

How long has your router been hooked up?

Please tell us the state (solid, blinking, off) and color of the LEDs on the front of the router.
e.g.
Power - solid green

WLAN -

LAN
1 -
2 -
3 -
4 -

WAN -

Connected -

On the back you should have a cat5e cable running from the 'Connection to Modem' port, to your Internet connection.

Take another cat5e cable and run it from one of the 4 other ports to the laptop's network port. Is the laptop able to get to the Internet like that?
Leave that cable plugged in for now, whether you have Internet or not.
Open a browser window, type 192.168.2.1 in the Address bar and hit Enter. If you already set a different password, enter it now; if not, leave it blank, and click Submit.
Belkin's Router Setup Utility should open. If it does, what does it say in the upper right corner after 'Internet Status' ?
If it doesn't display the Router Setup Utility, please let us know ASAP.
