Netgear Rangemax Next Wireless-N Router (WNR834B)

Having purchased the router (Netgear Rangemax Next Wireless-N Router - WNR834B) I am having serious problems getting wi-fi to work.  My old router was a Netgear also with 108m/bits.  I had connected a Wii a PSP and a PC with a USB dongle with no difficulty.

This router however runs on 54mb, 130mb or 270mb (see attached screenshot).  Anything other than 54mb is not accessible or even listed on a scan by any devices though, even with no encription.

Does anyone have any experience with this router, or see soemthing blindingly obvious I might have missed?

I never used one, but you can try a firmware upgrade from netgear to see if it resolves any of your connection issues. Also, do you have it set to broadcast the ssid?

You are limited to what the client radios can handle.  In other words, do any of your systems have an N band wireless card in them?  I am almost certain that the Wii and the PSP do not.  So you are probably only going to get 54mbps until you get all of the client radios upgraded (if even possible).

I also have an N band router, and even though my workstation has a N-band wifi card, the speed drops down to 54mbps when other non-N-band cards are connected.

Are you able to connect everything to the 54mbps speed?

Ubuntop - Ah I diddnt realise.  The shop said the standard belking pen would be fine, obviously they were wrong.  I will look into that and get back to you.

I am not certain of what the Belken Pen is, but if it is a G, B or A band wireless radio, then yes it should work just fine, just anywhere near as fast as the new router's box claims.

Here is the bigger story, you have an N band router.  Currently the N band frequency is not finalized or standardized; meaning it is still in a draft format.  To sum all of that up, in order to get those high speeds that are written so largely on the box, you have to buy brand new N band adapters for each system connecting to the router and they for the most part have to be from the same company that makes your router.

That being said, your router is backwards compatible with G, B and A bands.  So each of your devices should still be able to connect at probably 54mbps.

One other thing.  You mentioned scanning for the higher speeds in your question.. well basically you will only ever see one SSID (kingsbridge), then when you hit connect, this is when the speed is negotiated between router and your system radio.

Hi Ubuntop...

Belkin is a brand
By PEN I meant a USB WiFi adapter, I'm from the UK and USB Sticks (WiFi or memory) we often call a "pen".

Basicly, if any speed is chosen over 54mbs, the Kingsbridge SSID is not listed on any device scanning for it, and even a manual attempt to connect will fail.

The pen is G standard - and so this is the problem.  Having bought the router to work at 100mb+ with this adapter, the salesman mislead me.  It's not a big deal, I will return it and get a more conventional router without the cutting edge 'N' standard,
