It is strange that it is not working now, since it did before.  But, it sounds like you are having either a gateway or proxy issue.  Is this your home network?

If you can access your Office terminal server you are connected to the internet. If you are unable to get to web pages you may have a problem with DNS name resolution. Open up your web browser and try to connect to 72.14.207.99 (google.com), if it comes up you simply need to change your DNS Servers.

Also do you use a VPN connection to get to your office TS Server, or just Remote Desktop to its IP address?

It actually belongs to my boss who uses it at home on his wireless connection and also when he travels.  It was working fine when he was in the hotel last week, then the next day he couldn't get to the internet (from same hotel) but could get to our terminal server here in the office.

I now have it connected to our wireless here in the office with same results.

Click Start - Run - type "cmd" hit OK

type IPCONFIG /all and hit enter
Cut and paste the results into this thread (omit anything you believe might be confidential) so we can see whats going on.

Again, try my suggestion above to see if its connectivity or DNS.

typing the google ip address in browser didn't work.
the ip address the laptop is picking up is 207.16_.59.__
wasn't sure which numbers to leave out for confidentiality purposes

by: 0xSaPx0Posted on 2008-02-19 at 11:42:24ID: 20931796

If putting the IP directly into the browser didn't work, check to see if you are using a proxy server (tools - internet options - connections)

by: bugsysharePosted on 2008-02-19 at 11:42:50ID: 20931803

also - i am using remote desktop to get to the terminal server using the .mx address (not IP address)  haven't tried the VPN but can try that also.

by: bugsysharePosted on 2008-02-19 at 11:43:50ID: 20931813

not using proxy server

by: 0xSaPx0Posted on 2008-02-19 at 11:46:30ID: 20931844

Can you post the rest of that IPconfig /all, just delete the last two numbers of each of the IP addresses, post the subnet, default gw/ etc.

Everything looks up to snuff. From that same command window can you do the following and let me know the results.

1). type "ping defgw" where defgw is the IP specified in your default gateway
you should get
"Reply From ...."

If you do then :
2). type "ping 129.250.35.250" (random Internet DNS server)
again, you should get
"Reply from ...."

3). type "ping google.com"

Let me know what you get

Wow, sounds like the hotel might have changed the connection config.

Can anyone else in the office get to the internet?

I would probably start with the router and check to see if it is connected to the WAN, and move down the chain, the problem could be anywhere in between.  Your intranet can work without the extranet available.

If all the physical stuff is working, it would have to be your internet connection options for any proxy that should not be there.

Then check your tcp/ip adapter and ensure all your DNS's are in the box provided, as well as any gateways that should or should not be there.  It is possible that the hotel put an entry in one of those boxes that your computer is trying to use.

If you got replies from all of them then the Problem is with your web browser.

Can you follow this to reset the settings to default and let me know how it goes from there

by: bugsysharePosted on 2008-02-19 at 12:00:57ID: 20931977

everyone in the office can get to the internet, that isn't the problem.  the problem is specific to this one laptop.

by: 0xSaPx0Posted on 2008-02-19 at 12:05:06ID: 20932014

I understand that, I assumed we were doing all these test on this one laptop to determine the problem on that machine.

sry, i just posted that in answer to jayleew's questions

tried resetting browser back to defaults and that didn't work either.

i've had this problem once before and it wasn't a difficult fix, but can't remember what the fix was...ugh

by: bugsysharePosted on 2008-02-21 at 14:14:38ID: 20952440

The problem seemed to be with the McAfee software.  Once I removed that the internet connection worked fine so I'm removing my question.
Thanks for the help.

I am having a similar problem.  My Dell Laptop can connect no problem with the LAN port, but wireless will not connect to the internet.  It is connecting to the Router and DHCP is issuing the correct IP address however I still cannot connect to the internet when I disconnect my LAN cable and try to use wireless.

Below is the full IPCONFIG /ALL (I x'd out the IP address for security reasons)

I tried to connect to Google with IP as discussed above to check DNS but no luck.

Another thing to mention is that when I disconnect the cable I loose my Internet Connection Icon under Internet Gateway in the Network Connections Window.
