Question

Does not connect to internet through wireless

Asked by: JagdishDevaku

Hi,
I am using UTStarCom WA3002-G1 modem provided by BSNL for internet connection. It is connecting to internet through LAN(RJ45 Cable) but its not getting connected through wireless. I got deducted and added to my wireless devices with its device name. But while I am trying to connect, it is giving me "Unidetified Network" name in the place device name in "Network and Sharing Center". Could anyone help regarding this?

I am using windows vista.

I think that this is part of the 'public /  private' network designation that is causing these problems..   Seen them before.   You need to go into Network and Sharing Center make your router a 'private' connection...  (Select Customize > Private)

You may have to do some more configuration for DHCP, but lets start with the first step above..

BTW:  you can change the WiFi Connection name at the same time under Customize..

also if the public/private thing does not work check what kind of encryption you are using on your router. and get back to me. i had an issue with this my self setting up this machine.

by: MalnayilPosted on 2008-04-09 at 17:52:54ID: 21320612

if it is currently on wpa try changing it to wep. for some reason i had trouble with my d-link router using wpa working with my vista machine. i changed it to wep and i was up and running.

by: JagdishDevakuPosted on 2008-04-09 at 21:18:47ID: 21321674

i am using wpa2-psk... this is suggested in one of the forums....

In other it is said that... utstarcom wa3002-g1 is not supported by vista -> posted by one of the customer of HCL.

by: MalnayilPosted on 2008-04-09 at 21:49:52ID: 21321797

ill look in to the compatibility issue, in the meantime try changing your encryption type to WEP, reboot the computer and see if that gets you up on the wireless, if not we will go from there

Suppose I should have started with asking the question 'are you encrypting this', eh?  Always back out of encryption when diagnosing a WiFi problem...  :)

aye
the simple answers are usually the hardest to find

also make sure that the network name is all one word, if u try to make it a 2 word network name it may not connect you either.

Couple questions for you, do you have a second computer in the house? if so try setting it up wireless, if not then disregard this one.

when you are wireless can you log into the router through a browser.?
i really feel it is one of the simple things here, either the network name or the encryption. and im betting on encryption

by: JagdishDevakuPosted on 2008-04-10 at 09:04:24ID: 21326291

now i tried even wep 64bit encription... even this is not working... no improvements :(( ...

by: MalnayilPosted on 2008-04-10 at 11:18:41ID: 21327756

ok lets start with the basics. im sure u have done the normal steps but i will list them anyway.

power cycle modem
power cycle router
make sure all lights are on.

now lets start the real stuff.

please tell me what virus software you are using, firewall (windows or 3rd party). leave it in wep encryption (as that is a bit easier to work with) or disable encryption altogether if that is an option for you.

go to control panel-> networking and sharing-> on the side there will be manage network connections-> right click on your network adapter and click properties-> and double click internet protocol version 4 and click on automatically acquire ip address and dns. if that does not work then read below

This is straight from the Microsoft knowledgebase copied here for your convenience. This is the link if u want to see for yourself. there are other options as well but lets start here.

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
View products that this article applies to.
Article ID      :      928233
Last Review      :      September 6, 2007
Revision      :      2.1
SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario:
"      You connect a Windows Vista-based computer to a network.
"      A router or other device that is configured as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is configured on the network.
"      The router or the other device does not support the DHCP BROADCAST flag.
In this scenario, Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address.

CAUSE
This issue occurs because of a difference in design between Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Specifically, in Windows XP SP2, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 0 (disabled). In Windows Vista, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is not disabled. Therefore, some routers and some non-Microsoft DHCP servers cannot process the DHCP discovery packets.

RESOLUTION
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To resolve this issue, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps:
1.      Click StartStart button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2.      Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
3.      On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4.      In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5.      Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6.      In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7.      Close Registry Editor.

MORE INFORMATION
If the router or the non-Microsoft DHCP server does not support the DHCP BROADCAST flag, you can set the following registry entry as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}

Value name: DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0
Note A data value of 0 disables this registry entry. You can use this registry entry to prevent Windows Vista from using the DHCP BROADCAST flag. After you set this registry entry, Windows Vista never uses the DHCP BROADCAST flag.
