Many thanlks for taking the time to respond to my question, however your response is a wee bit more general that what I am looking for.
To
I have a 3 other XP devices, 2 laptops and a PC happily talking to the Netgear router. My laptop is the only one running Vista and is the only device having the dropout problem - regardless of where it is in the house. I am also aware that a number of folk have reported wifi dropping problems with Vista - what I am looking for is a response from someone with specific experience of getting Vista devices to operate wirelessly with the netgear WPN824v2.

Hi Phil, unfortunately wireless can be very temperamental. There are a limitless number of factors that can cause the problem you are experiencing, though in my experience these are normally due to radio signal / interference problems. The WPN824 supports 802.11b & g which both use the 2.4GHz band. This band can be heavily interfered with by many day to day devices such as microwave ovens, cordless phones and do not forget other wireless devices! The 2.4GHz is subdivided into channels though most of these can overlap causing interference to each other.
Possible Solutions:- Try disabling the MIMO feature if possible. Manually configure wireless device to use a different channel & test stability on each channel. Identify any sources of interfence and remove (this is not easy without an expensive toy such as Fluke AnalyzeAir).
In my environment the interference issues were due to other wireless networks, as there was nothing we could do about that we reconfigured the wireless network to use 802.11a, which uses a different band altogether. Unfortuately the WPN824 does not seem to support 802.11a.
No straight forward fix, however hope this helps to developing a solution for you.
