Browse All TopicsHello,
Recently got Cisco ASA5505 with Aironet 1130AG as replacement to our existing RV042 / WAP54G. Net to Cisco equipment in general, had some hard time to set basic things on ASA and finally connected to Internet. Now is time to set the AP. Connected it to port 0/7 (DHCP server running on ASA), and saw that the new DHCP client uses IP 192.168.0.11). Aironet is powered over the Ethernet. The problem is that I can't open web-based utility using this IP address and I cannot connect to it using Telnet or serial port (the message is something like LWAPP_CLIENT_ERROR: lwapp_name_lookup - Could not resolve CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.myh
Indicators: main rounded indicator alternating green, red and amber indefinitely, Etherner is green and Radio is red or amber).
After some research found that this AP is most likely in Lightweight mode, but there is a way to convert it to autonomous mode using CLI or Mode button. The problem is that I can't get access to it! To use Mode button I should first connect to it to program/verify the setup. So the question is how can I finally set this device so I can access it using (preferably) Web interface until I become familiar with CLI. If I should use CLI, please give me detailed instructions which command to run, what protocol to use to connect etc. Thanks.

Q. Can an access point that was converted from autonomous mode to lightweight mode supporting LWAPP be converted back to autonomous mode running Cisco IOS Software?
A. Yes. In order to convert an access point operating in lightweight mode back to autonomous mode, a new image must be placed on the access point. This can be performed via the following:
" If the access point is in contact with a controller, the controller can initiate the download of an autonomous Cisco IOS Software image.
" If the access point cannot contact a controller, it can be reverted back to autonomous Cisco IOS Software by rebooting the access point with the reset button pressed. Upon bootup, the access point looks for a Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server on the local subnet with an image named for it.
Yes, I saw these documents before, but I still can't clarify the procedure. I need step-by-step guide. I don't know, for example, where the reset button is located. Is it "Mode" button? Where and how to run TFTP server, where to obtain the right image file etc. I spent hours trying to collect all pieces of information together but, you know, my experience with Cisco products started with these devices yesterday evening. Thanks.
you can get a free tftp server here and install it on any pc.

Yes the reset button is the mode button, Continue pressing the MODE button until the Ethernet LED turns amber. (approximately 2 to 3 seconds). Then release the button to reset.
The only legitimate place to get a cisco image is from cisco, you need an account with privileges to download images from them.

There are less legitimate places to get Cisco IOS images but I don't think this is the kind of site to publish that information
Available software for download @ Cisco for 1130:
Select a Software Type
Autonomous To Lightweight Mode Upgrade Image
Autonomous To Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool
IOS Software
IP Setup Utility (IPSU)
I did install TFTP software on my PC and ran it, there is once window open, but I can't type any commands. So, if I have the correct image file, where should I put it and what is actually the procedure? Once the image is on the PC with running TFTP server, should I do anything on the PC or I need just to reboot AP and it will find it automatically? I can't still understand the procedure, that's why I asked this question - the information available inside the documents doesn't explain the whole procedure to people with less experience. Also, I do not see Lightweight to Autonomous Image file in list of downloads....
Its IOS software you need , that is the autonomous operating system .
You will need to put that in the folder called tftp-root on your c drive
you then have the tftp server software running (make sure in the options you have it set to transmit files
then try reseting your access point with it plugged into the same lan segment as your tftp server and see if it works.
You'll know if its working as you will get a message on the tftp server saying it is transmiting the file
OK, will try it... Which IOS release should I use? Do I need to rename the file so the AP can find it?

Just went through this with a 1130 myself thought I would add some info I found out.
1. The .tar file has to be renamed to c1130-k9w7-tar.default
2. Holding down the Mode button for 20-30 seconds until the radio button goes red will cause the access point to look for the tftp server.
3. It may just have been my AP but I watched as it booted while holding down the Mode button and it defaulted to 10.0.0.1 as its IP and 255.255.255.255 as the mask. Which caused the tftp server to fail since it was not on that subnet. To correct the problem I added a 10.0.0.# IP address on the tftp server, restarted the tftp server using the new address, and the AP downloaded the new IOS immediately.

no you can't convert back to normal ios a lightweight access point. And you cant use a lighweight access point without a wireless lan controller.. so as unhelpful as it is ..your stuck
