Question

Windows cannot configure this wireless connection

Asked by: axtur

I'm getting this message when I try to access the internet on a laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-FS570), in the windows Wireless list window, where all available wifi networks aroudn should show up I find this message:

Windows cannot configure this wireless connection

If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software.

If you want Windows to cinfigure this wireless connection, start thwe Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service. For information about starting the WZC service, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the microsoft.com Web site.

Any hints on this? What can i do?

This is not my laptop, it's from some person in the company, and they are freen to install whataever they want (they have admin permissions), and he says he hasn't installed anything.. Anyway I shouldn't trust his words, how can i check if there is any other software enabled that might "steal" the default wifi connection?

First, make sure wireless device is working, so check in device manager and see if there is no yellow mark or error at wireless adapter.

Then, click Start > Settings > Network Connections > right click on wireless network icon and select properties, and check wireless configuration there see if settings are correct to connect to company wireless network.

Provided that the hardware is enabled, this is usually related with another program trying to manage the connection, usually a driver / application that comes pre-installed with the laptop , check the Taskbar area (next to the clock) for any similar running program, if found just end those programs.

you might also need to make sure that Wireless Zero configuration service is not disabled.

Did you check the system tray (near clock) as suggested earlier to see if there are any wireless related programs running? It sounds like there is a third party program that's controlling the wireless access. You need to close or disable it and let Windows manage it. Make sure the Windows WIreless Zero configuration is started as well (Start->Run, type in services.msc and hit OK).

Since XP came out it's been called the notification area (nee System Tray).

The icon for the utility that comes with Broadcom chipset wireless cards looks like the one the arrow is pointing at in the attached screen clip. If the utility's icon is not there, either it's not been told to show itself there (look in the start menu for an Intel group with the wireless card info in it, start it manually, then check the box that says Always Show Wireless Icon ...), or you're using an auto-logon tool that's not pausing long enough at the password screen and the icon doesn't have time to load (use Start->Log Off, then logon again and it should appear, proabably with a few others that didn't have time to load).

I think the icon for the Intel cards might look like a little tower with radio waves emanating from the top.

After you've disabled that and you try to View Available Wireless Networks you'll probably get an error about the WZC service not running... make a note of the KB article it references and you can look it up at http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 and just follow the instructions in the KB article to be able to use the windows utility (most 2nd party utils give more information in their Site Monitors, though).

You have to disable the Intel wireless utilty before the WZC service will start.
