Question

Just Installed XP, can't find internet connection

I just downgraded my Toshiba Satellite laptop A205-S5804 from Vista to XP. I jumped through hoops just getting the install, many thanks to this site for the help. Now my laptop can't look for any wireless networks, and does not even recognize when I plug the network cable directly into it. I have already gobe to Toshiba's web site and thumbed over every XP driver that I could find on the site. What else can I try?

Are you missing drivers?  Try this:

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information. Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices". Any hardware device with a driver problem will be listed here. Make a note of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will contain a Vendor number and a Device number (VEN. . . . DEV. . . .)
both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here:

http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number.  First port of call is the manufacturer's website.  If no joy there, try a driver database like Driverguide:

http://www.driverguide.com/

These hardware diagnostics are free:
Belarc:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Siw:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/siw.html
If you have problems downloading, use the System Indformation proceedure in my post above to find out the manufacturer of the driverless chips...

All,

You got me most of the way there, but some of those links just gave folders that don't include an executable. Those all-inclusive folders with all of the XP drivers were nice, but not worth much without a way to launch them.

I got most of my driver issues resolved, but according to "Problem Devices" I'm still missing the 8086 PCI & Video Drivers, the 8197 WLAN, and the 1901 "Not Available" driver.

And my laptop still isn't looking for internet connections and does not have sound.

You may want to try installing the intel chipset utility first to see if that helps the rest of the items recognize properly.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=816&DwnldID=16023&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng

After you install that you likely have to reboot... once you reboot it should better detect the hardware and then try reinstalling the drivers from toshibas site:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modItemList.jsp?moid=1909174&rpn=PSAF3U&ct=DL&BV_SessionID=@@@@1925116084.1218858984@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadeeljmfkhicgfkceghdgngdgnj.0
or from one the links previously mentioned by the other members.

TheLastOfTheDukeStreetKings,

8086 is a Vendor number (in this case Intel).  We also require the Device number for each driverless chip.
For example:
PCI\DEV_8086&DEV_2572&SUBSYS_25721849&REV_02\3&...etc.
This would refer to an Intel chip number 82865G (according to PCIdatabase.com) and the driver would be available from the Intel site.
Hope that makes sense...

Two fo the links were good, but the WLAN drivers that I downloaded didn't include a .exe file. How do I get them to run?

I also saw that I missed one of my missing drivers yesterdayL

There is not always an exe file, sometimes it will be an .inf file.  If you go to device manager and double click the problem device.  Next click on the driver tab and select update driver...
Once the wizard begins, it will ask if you want to use windows update... select NO, not at this time and click next.
Now it will ask if you want to install it automatically or from a specific location.  Choose specific location and click next.
Now you can do one of two things, first you can try Search for the best driver, and be sure to put a check mark in the 'Include this location to search'  and be sure to either use the Browse button to select the path to the inf file or type it in manually.

Or click 'Dont search. I will choose' and click next, then 'Have Disk', then browse to the inf file.

Dart, stupid question - where is the device manager?

by: DartPCPosted on 2008-08-18 at 17:23:59ID: 22256432

Click  Start----> Settings -----> Control Panel -----> System ----> Hardware tab ----> Device manager

Or the easier route:

Right click on 'MY Computer'-----> Manage ----> Device manager

by: TheLastOfTheDukeStreetKingsPosted on 2008-08-18 at 19:12:02ID: 22256825

Thanks, Dart. OK everybody, home stretch here - I've got all of the drivers save for two.

Device manager shows this:
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

Device ID is:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0268&SUBSYS_1179FF14&REV_1000\4&1C9E01A1&0&0001

And I think I found what that "Not Available" device was. The device manager is showing that I'm missing:
"Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus"

Device ID for the "Not Avaialable" driver is: ACPI\TOS1901\2&DABA3FF&0

I've gone through all of the links above and googled these like crazy. Does anyone know where I can find these final two drivers?

Did you ever run Everest?   I don't work for the company and I'm not telling you to download a virus.  It is a great little app.

by: phototropicPosted on 2008-08-19 at 00:44:50ID: 22257809

From my first post:
"...These hardware diagnostics are free:
Belarc:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Siw:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/siw.html..."

I just downloaded the driver from the link I posted (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true) and that does contain an .exe setup file.

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus     is also from Realtek:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Good luck!!!

type msconfig
restar the wireless zero config, under service tab

All,

Computermuk:            I started with Everest last night and got to the install point where it started asking for cash. I wanted to do more research on it before continuing. I do agree that it looks like a good app, but will it provide me with the drivers?

Phototropic:             I haven't reinstalled Belarc yet, and will check out snapfiles as well. But aren't they more diagnostic files? And the first Realtek driver worked fine, while I just realized that I didn't navigate the page properly for the audio driver link - I think that I figured out what I was doing wrong and will try again this evening.

devangshroff:         Pardon my ignorance (of course, then I wouldn't be here), but what is your suggestion going to do?

Thank you all for your support...

by: phototropicPosted on 2008-08-19 at 06:29:12ID: 22259521

Yes, Belarc and Siw are system diagnostics that help you to identify hardware so that the process of tracking down drivers is made easier.

Just to clarify, which drivers are still missing (i.e. in System Information - Problem Devices , what entries are left?)

by: ComputerMunkeyPosted on 2008-08-19 at 06:39:44ID: 22259610

The Everest link I posted is the free edition 2.20.  You do not  have to pay.   It can help you identify exactly what you have and not only will it tell you the drivers, but often times it will give you the url for the website to get them.

by: TheLastOfTheDukeStreetKingsPosted on 2008-08-19 at 09:44:29ID: 22261501

Photo, The only two I'm still missing are the ones from last night's 10:12 posting (at the bottom of this posting)

CMunk, I wasn't completely clear in my post. The software is free if you want it to evaluate your machine, but asks for cash if you want it to fix various items. Which I'm not adverse to doing, but I want to see what info I can dig up on it first. And I couldn't tell from the myriad of major and minor items it found which ones pertained to my drivers issue.

Here are my remaining missing items:

Device manager shows this:
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

Device ID is:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0268&SUBSYS_1179FF14&REV_1000\4&1C9E01A1&0&0001

And I think I found what that "Not Available" device was. The device manager is showing that I'm missing:
"Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus"

Device ID for the "Not Avaialable" driver is: ACPI\TOS1901\2&DABA3FF&0

by: phototropicPosted on 2008-08-19 at 10:34:54ID: 22261956

The link I posted 08.44 should be right for your Audio Device:

"...Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus     is also from Realtek:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false..."

Have you tried this driver?  If you did, what happened?

by: ComputerMunkeyPosted on 2008-08-19 at 13:13:47ID: 22263448

I'm sorry.  Everest doesn't ever ask me for money for anything I've ever used it for.  Are you sure you downloaded and ran Everest Home edition 2.20?  It runs benchmarks and gives reports and driver info. but doesn't really "fix" anything.

by: TheLastOfTheDukeStreetKingsPosted on 2008-08-19 at 13:35:27ID: 22263623

NP, Cmunk. I'll uninstall the version I downloaded and take another stab at it tonight.

Guys, I was messing around with some of the apps you mentioned last night when I realized something. I've got my sound and LAN drivers installed, so this case is closed!

I have one more question - several of you helped to various degrees, but I'd like to award you full points - if I accept multiple solutions will it divvy the points, or would I need to jack up my point total first to give you the allotment that I want to award?

I'm new to this forum, so any advice on this last part would be appreciated.

Yeah, click the "Accept Multiple Solutions" button.
