it is asking for a key yes, but i get the error after i have put the key in

XP SP2 does not support some security standards out of the box. Others are a hassle. If the wireless card came with software, I'd suggest installing it. For instance, if you're using a linksys wireless adapter with WPA2, it has a nice utility that allows you to connect easily.
if you want to avoid the third party software, microsoft has a hotfix for xp sp2 that adds support for WPA2 authentication. It may have an impact on other types as well.

what is the exact error you are getting???have you checked connecting without any wireless security like wep or WPA installed??is it asking for a key??/
