Question

Sierra Wireless AirCard 595 and DLink DIR-450 3g Router Problem.

Asked by: moisesperez

I am having issues configuring the AIR Card 595 from Sprint with The DIR-450 Router.
The router is at the most recent firmware v.1.03 and Hardware Revision A1.

This is the router: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=524
Thie is the card: http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhones?id16=Sprint_Air_Card_595&phoneSKU=AC595DORA

Does any one have experienced problems with this setup.
Issue is when you insert the card and configure the router with the Country, ISP and Card and try to connect, it says connection failed.
In the past we had similiar setup, except that the card was an USB Card       Novatel Ovation U720 (Sprint - USB) and everything worked perfectly. We didn't have to provide any username, password, server name.
The dial number by default for sprint cards is #777.

On the other hand, if this is not a perfect setup is there any other 3G router that supports this card 110%.

Please help.

Do you know for sure the card is activated?
e.g. does it work when you insert the card in a Card Bus slot on a laptop and run OSCM3?
(OSCM3 is Sprint's connection manager application - usually named Sprint Mobile Broadband in the Start menu and on the Desktop.)
If it does, check for firmware updates for the card like that, then see if it will work in the DIR-450.

The card in fact works perfectly in the notebook, no issues.
Gets connected right away and i am getting promised speeds.
The firmware is P1905800.

There are no firmware updates available either on Sprint or Sierra Wireless websites.

Well, the AC595 is *supposed* to work with the DIR-450, so maybe you got a bad router... try a hard reset on it (AKA a 30-30-30 reset), and if that doesn't help I suggest contacting D-Link's support. If you don't get any satisfaction from them, the only other 2 routers I know of that say they work with the AC595 are the Kyocera KR2 (which is a rebadged Cradlepoint MBR-1000 with an added Cardbus slot) and the Linksys WRT54G3G-ST (the 'ST' suffix means it's especially for the Sprint network... they also make a -VN and -AT for the Verizon and ATT networks, respectively). Kyocera used to have D-Link make the KR-1 for them, but it never supported the AC595, to my knowledge.

The 30-30-30 reset involves removing all cables and the card from the router, then plugging it in (it's not good for 3G routers to hot-swap the card), depressing the reset switch on the back of the router for 90 seconds and removing the power from the unit for the middle 30-second block.
i.e. press the reset, after 30-secs pull the power plug for 30-secs while continuing to hold in the reset switch, then plug the power back in and continue depressing the switch for 30 more seconds.

Thank you for the response.
I was able to find the latest firmware for the card, simply downloaded the latest connectivity manager from sprint and installed it. Application automatically found outdated firmware and updated it along the PRL and Sofware Card Version.
Before proceeded uninstallation of all previously installed Sprint Programs/Drivers is required, then reboot.

We also tried the 30-30-30 reset, but it didn't help.

By playing with the router, it was possible to telnet it either with command line or HyperTerminal.
The Dlink is running on stripped i486 Linux, BusyBox.
Two useful commands lsusb, lspci.
lsusb list all active usb ports, when command was run with USB card in the port, the device was listed and able to query it using querymodem command.
lspci list all active pci ports, when command was run with or without PC card it wouldn't detect it.
When diagnosing the /var/log/messages bootup process log file, it was clearly stated the the pcmcia port couldn't load.

At the end it was a bad PCMCIA slot in the router as stated by DLink Senior Technical Support Rep.
When we insert the card into the slot, activity lights didn't light up.
When connected to the notebook the light showed up just fine.
We had different USB and PCMCIA Verizon card, when inserted into USB/PCMCIA slots USB Card had lights on, PCMCIA card did not.

We decided to go for WRT54G3G-ST, lets hope how it works out.

Thank you
