Question

I cannot setup my Linksys WET54G

Asked by: TimLeslie

I have got a Linksys WET54G Ethernet Bridge to help boost my wireless throughout the house (Big old house with thick walls!) But I cannot even get past step 1!!!! I've connected the device directly to my laptop via Ethernet and started the setup routine. But the device (Despite me adding it to my access list on the network) simply will not recognise the network (Netgear 834G router). It just searches and then says "Setup utility unable to locate a Wireless Bridge..." I've reset to factory defaults and checked out a couple of suggestions I found on forums but none of which are working.
Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Hello TimLeslie,

Most likely the IP-range used on your computer isn't the same as the range the bridge is on.

Just put the computer onto a static IP before changing any settings in the bridge.
You can do this by going to Start => run => type "ncpa.cpl" and press enter => right-click on the used connection and choose "properties"
Here select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and choose properties.

At the following screen, please fill in the following details:
IP address : 192.168.1.25
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Other entries can remain empty, click OK and close the following window.

At this moment you should be able to setup the bridge through the cd-rom or through the setuppage which you can find at http://192.168.1.226

After finalizing the installation you can go back to the location described above and put the TCP/IP properties back on "automatic configuration", make sure also to put the DNS on automatic again.

If you're running into any problems, let me know.

Regards,

LucF

Yes, the setup CD should have made a route to 192.168.1.0 through the interface with the lowest metric, but if you have 3G or draft-n (or WiMAX, multiple ethernet, et al) interfaces in the laptop it may be adding the route to the wrong interface.

So forget the setup CD and assign a static IP as LucF outlined.
Leave the username blank, and the default password is admin when you get the login screen.

Guys, all sorted. Thanks for your input, it was all down to the IP Address not being in the same range. Many thanks for the assistance.
