Asked by: omarfarid

I have a problem in wireless coverage in my flat. I have purchased linksys wireless-G (wag354g) adsl gateway which I later replaced with wireless-N broadband router (model wrt160n).

Can I some how use the old wireless-g as booster to extend the wireless coverage?

If yes then please provide me with necessary steps.

Thanks

The simplest way would be to setup your enviroment to look like

PC -> Wireless G -> Wireless N

using gateways to G from the PC and N from the G

(You will have to setup the IP addresses accordingly)

Seasons Greetings.

How to configure the wireless G gateway?

by: RohitBagchiPosted on 2008-12-28 at 09:14:38ID: 23252012

You would be using the second router (G) only as an access point.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router (G)  to be in the same subnet as the primary router (N), but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router (N). For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router (G)

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Just to fill you in, in case you didn't get the concept, this is known as a wireless bridge.

The manuals that came with your routers will tell you specifically how to set it up and you can use the guidelines above to help you out.

by: omarfaridPosted on 2008-12-28 at 09:24:53ID: 23252050

how the G router will be configured as an access point? how it will connect to the N router?

by: omarfaridPosted on 2008-12-28 at 09:29:34ID: 23252058

unfortunately, the manuals are useless and even do not show you how to make the s/w on the cd work successfully. If you have any links I will be happy to read

these devices cannot be 'daisy chained' together. they can both be wireles access points but I don't think they support "WDS" to bridge them together.
to get the benefit of wirless N - your laptop also need a "n" receiver .

if you have wireless problems in your flat look at homeplu networking :

Connect a cable from one of the WRT160N's 4 LAN ports to one of the 4 (yellow) LAN ports on the WAG354G (do not use its Line port).

On the Setup 'tab' of the WAG354G...
Under the Basic Setup submenu
none of the setting at the top matter because you won't be using the modem section.
Set the Local IP Address to 192.168.1.10 (presuming the WRT160N's default LAN IP is still 192.168.1.1 and its default DHCP range is still beginning at 192.168.1.100), and Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0.
Set the Local DHCP Server to 'DHCP Relay'.
Set your Time Zone, then Save Settings.
Over on the right click Advanced Routing on the submenu, set NAT to disabled.
Set the routing options to Disabled. Save Settings again.

You should be able to use the WAG354G as an access point now...  as chilternPC pointed out, there is no way to make it work as a wireless repeater or bridge.  It has to be wired LAN port to LAN port with its DHCP server disabled and the modem section bypassed to use as an AP.

Hello

>>Can I some how use the old wireless-g as booster to extend the wireless coverage?

The answer is NO!.  No! you can't connect them in wireless.  Because they have different wireless mode.

You can only connect them using a cable and let them work as a wireless access point for other wireless client users.

Great is our GOD.
