I don't believe it's possible to use promisuous mode under windows.
Try booting from a live distribution of linux, though... e.g.
NST - http://www.networksecuritytoolkit.org/nst/index.html

The backtrack livecd is also good for this:

Backtrack is one of the tools included on the NST CD.  :-)

???

Backtrack is a slackware based linux livecd, that has a collection of applications useful for security purposes......

According to the NST website "This bootable ISO live CD/DVD is based on Fedora. The toolkit was designed to provide easy access to best-of-breed Open Source Network Security Applications and should run on most x86 platforms."

It looks like they are 2 very similar products - but NST is fedora based and backtrack is slackware based.... both would do what is required though :) which I'm guessing is put a Wireless Interface into promiscuous mode through the use of a command such as:

# iwconfig eth1 mode monitor

Is there any other way?I'm not very knowledgeable in Linux.

by: Roachy1979Posted on 2009-01-15 at 02:25:34ID: 23382004

"The Windows Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) API does not support any extensions for wireless monitor mode in most versions of Windows. Starting with NDIS 6 in Windows Vista, it is possible to enable monitor mode.[1] NDIS 6 supports exposing 802.11 frames to the upper protocol levels;[2] with previous versions of NDIS only fake Ethernet frames translated from the 802.11 data frames can be exposed to the upper protocol levels.

Linux's interfaces for 802.11 drivers support monitor mode and many drivers offer that support.[3] FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and DragonFly BSD also provide an interface for 802.11 drivers that supports monitor mode, and many drivers for those operating systems support monitor mode as well.

In versions of Windows prior to Windows Vista, some packet sniffer applications such as Wildpackets' OmniPeek provide their own device drivers to support monitor mode."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_mode

Check out http://www.wildpackets.com/ for Omnipeek for Windows.....

Alternatively, what are you trying to achieve (ie. why are you wanting to use monitor mode?).  If you can elaborate on the question maybe we can help you achieve the result in Linux, as long as it's not in breach of the TOS (http://www.experts-exchange.com/memberAgreement.jsp)

I found someone was trying to access my wifi connection.I wanted to use an IDS to detect and block intruders. But for this to work i need to enable monitor mode..

by: Roachy1979Posted on 2009-01-15 at 03:25:27ID: 23382256

Which IDS were you trying to use?  If it sits on a Windows Vista platform it may enable monitor mode (apparently this is possible) itself.  The only ways I've seen of doing this are the proprietary http://www.airdefense.net/ and linux based open source route http://snort-wireless.org/

I'd suggest you try using a linux distro + snort for this purpose - theres a turorial here: http://www.wireless-bern.ch/?page_id=1457 although I haven't tried this personally, but have set up snort on it's own before, and it's pretty straightforward.  Just plan properly and read the docs first...

by: india141Posted on 2009-01-15 at 03:34:26ID: 23382299

I was under the impression that I'd to enable monitor mode before I could run snort.I will try out your idea.

You can create a network bridge between your wireless and lan network connections. This should enable promiscuous mode. This is how its done:

 http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/785e46b1-f445-4bd3-93bd-1235ba2e146d1033.mspx

Make sure ICS is disabled in wireless and lan network connection before you proceed with setting up a network bridge.
