Question

Creating Guest VLAN for wireless Cisco 1100

Asked by: amigan_99

I have a Cisco AP1100 with one SSID and puts all users onto VLAN 1of the 2950 switch to which it is connected.  I would like to create a guest VLAN that would put guests onto another VLAN - say VLAN 111.  I am seeking the basic steps required at the switch and AP to add a guest VLAN and SSID on the switch?  Do you make the FE interface on the AP a trunked interface and then use "IP Helper" on whatever device routes for the guest VLAN?  Thanks.

I haven't done this specifically with a Cisco AP, but have done it with 3Com APs and Cisco switches, but the theory should be the same and you are on the right track.

Create your second SSID, assign it a VLAN value and trunk the AP to the switch.  You would configure the new VLAN appropritely, including a IP Helper address and set the appropriate routes in your router.  Hope this helps.

Sure. It's pretty simple.

You would create VLAN's on your existing switched network VLAN111.

Then, you would trunk the port that AP is connected to. Give the native vlan whatever vlan the management address is on.

Then, enable VLAN's on the AP1100. Create a SSID called guest, and assign the VLAN111 to that SSID.

If you post your config and ip information, I can give you more specific commands.

Can you give me the VLAN's you have and their associated networks?

Also, specify which VLAN you want to use as the guest VLAN.

by: amigan_99Posted on 2009-01-26 at 20:09:07ID: 23473623

Oh - on the switch at present there is VLAN 1 and the AP is attached to VLAN 1.  I have created another VLAN 111 that will be for the guest VLAN and connected that to the egress router.  I know how to create the trunk on the switch side.  Need to know how to config the AP side.  Also when I make the switch port a trunk - will it take down the reachability of the AP until I get it configured?   Wanting to avoid cutting off the AP if I can but if console access required ok.

by: jjmartineziiiPosted on 2009-01-26 at 20:38:16ID: 23473748

Yes, its a possibility you may lose reachability.

Let's assume:
VLAN1 - 192.168.1.X 255.255.255.0
VLAN111 - 192.168.2.X 255.255.255.0

Assume the AP's ip is 192.168.1.30.

Create a new SSID and call it GUEST and configure whatever encryption you'd like.

-From the AP GUI, click Services > VLAN to navigate to the Services: VLAN page .
-The first step is to configure the native VLAN. From the Current VLAN List, select New.
-Enter the 1 in the VLAN ID box.
-Select the checkbox for the Native VLAN.
-Select check boxes for your radio and select "altitude" for the SSID
-Click Apply.

-From the AP GUI, click Services > VLAN to navigate to the Services: VLAN page .
-The first step is to configure the native VLAN. From the Current VLAN List, select New.
-Enter the 111 in the VLAN ID box.
-Select check boxes for your radio and select "GUEST" for the SSID
Click Apply.

Configure the switch trunk:

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk native vlan 1

That should be it!

Also, after creating the first VLAN, it may lose connectivity. In that case, create the first, trunk, then create the second.
