Question

Problem installing EDUP Wireless Adapter with Vista

Asked by: medcomputers

I am having problems connecting to my wireless broadband router, BT Voyager 2000, with an EDUP Wireless LAN card that I have just installed on my Vista computer. I have installed the Atheros Client Installation that came on the CD with the card. The card and driver are installed correctly as indicated in Device Manager. My problem is that I don't know hoe to enter the security settings tha I have on my router into the new wireless card. I can connect with an ethernet cable with no problem but I would like to set up the new wireless card so that I can use the computer anywhere in the house. Can anyone help at all?
Many thanks
Matthew

This is how I would setup a profile in ACU on XP. I'm assuming the vista process is the same.

Open the Atheros Client Utility, and on the Profile Management tab click the Scan button.

Select the desired network's SSID from the list if there is more than 1, and click Activate.

The same Profile Management screen you would get by clicking 'New' should open to its General tab.

Enter a Profile Name (e.g. BT2000); the Client Name by default will be the user name you're logged on as, and the SSID1 should be filled in already from the network you chose on the Scan screen.

Switch to the Security tab.

While WPA/WPA2 is the most secure, as far as I know the voyager 2000 supports only WEP, so choose Pre-Shared Key (Static WEP) then click the Configure... button.

If your password is 5 or 10 characters, select the 64-bit radio button for WEP Key 1 and at the top select HEX for 10 characters or ASCII for 5 characters.
If your password is 13 or 26 characters, select the 128-bit radio button for WEP Key 1 and at the top select HEX for 26 characters or ASCII for 13 characters.
Most routers do not support 152-bit WEP, but that would be 16 or 32 characters.

If the password is 10 or 26 characters, it must consist only of the numbers 0-9 and/or the letters A-F.
If the password is 5 or 13 characters, it can consist of any character you can enter from the keyboard. e.g. the 97 standard characters you can type, or even Alt+#### characters (e.g. Alt+0128 = hold down an Alt key and enter 0 1 2 8 on the numpad - not the numbers across the top - then release the Alt key and a Euro sign should appear if the font you're using has a Euro sign in it)... the Alt+#### combinations show in the lower-right corner when you select them in Character Map.

If your router actually does support WPA or WPA2, I strongly recommend you choose and setup one of those security methods instead of WEP.

OK out of the WEP window. and go to the Advanced tab.

For Authentication Mode choose Open.

Network type should be Infrastructure.

Leaving the Channel on Auto is fine.

You can enter the MAC address of your router in the Preferred APs screen if you want, but that doesn't really help security much.

Click OK and you should then be connected... floating the cursor over the tray icon will show the speed you're connected, IP, et al, in the tooltip.

Hi Darr247
Many thanks for comments. My problem is that I don't know how to open the Atheros Client Utiity. The driver is installed and can be seen in Device Manager but I can see no link or icon to open up the Client, that really is my problem. Am I missing somethin?
Thanks

It should be in the notification area in the lower-right corner of the screen. It typically looks like 4 bars in a stairstep pattern, which can each be green yellow or red. If it's not visible try clicking the circle with the less-than sign (<) in it.
Then right-click on it and choose Open Atheros Client Utility... from the context menu.

Or you could try running "C:\Program Files\Atheros\ACU.exe" - though you may need to browse in the Program Files folder if it got installed to a different folder (I don't know what install program you used... many card makers that utilize Atheros chipsets customize or 'brand' the ACU).

Hi Darr247
I think my problem is that the Atheros Client Utility is not installed, just the card driver. I have looked for the icon in the taskbar and it is not there. I have also looked in C:\ Program Files\Atheros and there is no ACU.exe, just an image icon. I have run a search and cannot find it on my C drive. I have also checked the installation CD that came with the adapter. There is a setup file with three CAB files. I have cheked and rerun the setup file and receive the message that the installation completed successfully. Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks
Matthew

You should be able to connect using windows wireless zero configuration, then.
The vista wireless icon should be similar to ACU's.  Right-click it and choose Connect to a Network.
Select your network from the list and click the Connect button. It should prompt you for a password. If security is not enabled vista will warn you and you have to click Connect Anyway to confirm.

Hi Darr247
I'm sorry but I'm really confused. I have started wireless zero configuration but now the driver for the Atheros card seems to be corrupt or missing. When trying to connect using the card I receive the error message"Windows cannot load the device driver for the hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)." I have tried reloading the software and searching for updates without success. I'm beginning to wonder if the card is incompatible with Vista, even though there are Vista drivers on the installation CD, as I have heard that it works fine with XP. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks
Matthew

If all you need to do is pop off an access cover, please examine the card for an FCCID number somewhere on it. Thanks.

by: medcomputersPosted on 2009-01-24 at 16:27:52ID: 23458934

Hi Darr247
There is a cover which I have removed. I can't see an FCCID number. There is a S/N, Model No & Mac address. There are some partially hidden numbers and it does say Foxconn 0043 on a white plate.
Don't know if that helps.
Thanks
Matthew

Did you release the clips to pull it out of the slot and look on the backside?

The information I have found on EDUP wireless cards indicate they have Broadcom chipsets in them, not Atheros.

by: Darr247Posted on 2009-01-24 at 18:13:21ID: 23459310

In the Device Manager, if you right-click the adapter and choose Properties, then look on the Details tab, can you select the Device Instance ID from the picklist then click on the value to highlight it, so you can copy (Ctrl+C - the usual right-click context menu may not appears there) and paste it to a message, please?

At least the PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx part.  Thanks.

Hi Darr247
It is an Atheros chipset and there is nothing on the back of it. I'm attaching a screenshot as you requested. I was going to say please don't spend too long in this problem, I'm thinking of buying another card and trying this one in an XP machine when I get a minute.
Thanks

Try this one...
http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/atheros/atheros_7.3.1.5_Vista(www.station-drivers.com).exe

At 488 KB, it's obviously drivers-only (no ACU), but they have passed vista's WHQL testing for that card.
Right-click the card in Device Manager and choose Uninstall, then run that install file from station-drivers.com.

by: Darr247Posted on 2009-01-25 at 06:57:44ID: 23461148

It looks like the newest version with ACU included is
http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/atheros/wifi/atheros_ar5xxx_7.6.1.162-vista(www.station-drivers.com).exe

This site - http://www.atheros.cz/index.php - also has Atheros drivers, but you need to get the AR number off the chip... it should be the first line under the ''Atheros'' trademark.  e.g. AR5002, AR5008, or AR5416-xxxx, AR5424A, et cetera.

by: medcomputersPosted on 2009-01-25 at 15:33:42ID: 23463213

Hi Darr247
I have identified the Atheros chip as AR 5213A-00 and downloaded the driver from atheros.cz. I'm attaching a screenshot of the unzipped driver as I'm not sure how to install it. I have unistalled my original driver and now the card has disappeared from device manager. Do you think it is time to give up and buy another card?!

Navigate to the M:\Atheros folder, right-click on the netathr file (with the 'Setup Information' icon), and choose Install.

by: medcomputersPosted on 2009-01-25 at 22:59:51ID: 23464573

Hi Darr247
I have tried to right-click on the netathr file and get the error message "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation"

Hi Darr247
Apologies for delay in posting. I have not bee able to get the  EDUP Wireless Adapter to work with Vista and am not entirely sure why. I have seen that other people have had similar problems with this product and at the moment I'm still connecting with my ethernet cable.
Thank you for all your advice and comments. I think the most appropriate overall comment was in your original posting and I will give that the 500 as the best partial solution.
Thanks
Matthew
