Question

Computer freezes when running WiFi adaptor

Asked by: Dominic_Clifford

Computer freezes when running the adaptor. I've got Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 3. The windows firewall is on. The router is a BT Home Hub.

I followed Belkin Support's advise to uninstall the adaptor. What they said, below. AFter that I was unable to install the updated version of the software due to an InstallShield error: "an error occurred while defining the dialog box".

Link to updated software, that I can't install: http://www.belkin.com/uk/support/article/?lid=enu&pid=F5D8051uk&aid=6301&scid=0

And unisntall instructions that I suspect may have caused the InstallShield error:

Step:1) To uninstall the driver:
1. Right click on My computer Icon.
2. Click on properties.
3. Click on device manager tab.
4. Click on + sign next to network adapter.
5. Right click on Belkin adapter.
6. Click on remove.
7. Close all the windows.
8. Double click on My computer Icon.
9. Double click on C Drive.
10. Click on Program files.
11. Right click on Belkin folder.
12. Click on Delete.
13. Once it is done, please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Belkin software.

Have you tried using system restore to go back to a previous state before the time that all this happened to allow yourself to start from scratch?

System restore can be found in start > accessories > system tools.

The belkin unistaller was probably located in the belkin folder you deleted in the program files. Hopefully you just deleted this folder to the recycle bin whaere it can be recovered. If not, try running the old installer you had originally installed and see if that will let you uninstall it. If thats a no go, it sounds like you need to search the registry and delete all traces of any belkin software.
If this gets you working again, either run the installer for the old software again and select remove software,  or else start with removing from the control pannel add/remove programs.

I've tried system restore - doesn't work unf0rtunately - tried multiple restore points - and won't go back to any of them

Found something with "Belkin" in the registry - removed it. But still get the InstallShield error. Can't install from the original disk - same error.

I tried something that seems to have got the InstallShield working again - I used the Piriform CCleaner Tools, selected the Belkin N1 Wireless USB Adapter and tried to run uninstall - got the InstallShield error again - so I just deleted the entry - which removes the uninstall entry from the registry. The InstallShield worked after that - so I've installed from the link supplied by Belkin successfully. Unfortunately the driver seems to be dated back in 2007 - the same as on the disk I got with the product - so I'm expecting my computer to freeze again soon. At least back to square one, as opposed to square -1.

Just to confirm: back to the original problem now - the adapter causes the computer to freeze. Thre doesn't seem to be a later driver than the one I've got dated 25Apr07 - so I don't know what else to try. Any thoughts gratefully received. Thanks.

Have you perhaps tried rolling back to xp service pack 2 to see if that causes the problem. When does it actual fail and cause your system to freeze?

by: Dominic_CliffordPosted on 2009-02-11 at 12:08:47ID: 23615512

Thanks for latest suggestions - apologies for delayed response. Rollback to xp service pack 2 didn't work, unfortunately. Said file(s) missing. I could load service pack 2 from the recovery disk that came with the computer... Sounds a bit drastic?

Belkin gave me a driver only package that seems to have worked. I unistalled the adapter, and installed that.
