Question

Wireles with WPA doesn't work on Vista

Asked by: gplana

I installed on a new machine, both Windows XP and Windows Vista 64bits (dual booting). I have a router configured with WPA security.

After installing the wireless drivers for the PCI wireless card, and configure the connection, it works perfectly, tud it doesn't work on Windows Vista. It detects perfectly the wireless net, but it is unable to connect it.

Can you help me ?

I am using vista and WPA works 100%.

DId you go thru the connection wizard in Vista?

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-01 at 15:42:21ID: 23523593

I tried to configure manually and also using the wizard which comes with the software installed for the CD which comes with that PCI wireless adaptor.

Using this wizard works perfectly when I boot using Windows XP. Also, If I disable the security on the router (open connection, instead of WPA or WEP) then it works perfectly on Vista.

Trying disabling UAC and then try connecting to your router.

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-01 at 16:20:30ID: 23523703

That doesn't seem to make sense, as I can connect to router without disabling UAC if there isn't any security enabled on router.

Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your wireless card.

by: fmarshallPosted on 2009-02-01 at 23:48:07ID: 23524948

Try, try again.

Retype the passphrase.  That's worked for me more than once!

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-01 at 23:54:15ID: 23524967

Yes, I downloaded from internet. Also, there isn't any error when installed (just the typical warning that "allos to execute"..

Could it be because I haven't any Service Pack installed ? Or maybe because it's the 64 bits version ?

Thank you.

Hi !
Setup the connection in "manual" way using Windows interface and disable TKIP (actualy enabled in Vista) .

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 04:15:31ID: 23526214

I'm not sure if I understood you. My router is configured using TKIP mode, so I need to configure TKIP mode on Vista I'm sure TKIP on the router is working as I have another computer (from which I'm writing these lines) configured with TKIP. Also, if I start the other computer (the computer which fails)  booting with Windows XP instead of Vista, it works perfectly with TKIP.

So I suspect there is a driver incompatibility with Windows Vista, but I don't know how to solve. Can you help me ?

by: gnegrotaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 04:39:48ID: 23526363

Was a try . Vista 64 is wellknown to have big problems with WPA-PSK and sometimes disabling TKIP solve the problems, but sometimes not. Anyway, all are in wait for a fix from Microsoft about that ...
This it happend with some "older" WiFi routers . There is some that report "ok" with WPA2-TKIP or AES . Give it a try ... :-D ... or Service Pack ...

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 04:59:35ID: 23526472

Unfortunately my router seems not supporting WPA2 neither AES. Just WPA-PSK with server radious and without server (which is the actual configuration).

Te router is a 3com 3CRWDR100Y-72

There is spanish version ( the final "Y" mean spanish; the english version have an "A" ).
You can upgrade the firmware to 2.06T13 from here :
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=6&sort=effdt&sku=3CRWDR100A-72&order=desc  . This is the latest version.

Thank you for your answer, gnegrota. You are helping me so much.

I installed the new drivers, but unfortunattely there is no option to put other configuration than TKIP on WPA-PSK.

Do you have any other idea ?

by: gnegrotaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:02:49ID: 23528120

No problem, retry to define again the connection fron Vista box. Anyway, as I understand, you have Home edition (right ?!), but you could be able to have various encription levels to connect .
Let me know.

n.b. From LOG, seems that Vista are waiting for Multicast Key exchange and the router are not send it. Lower the firewall level in 3COM, at first .

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:11:07ID: 23528235

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits (without any service pack).

I disabled the firewall on router and also the Windows Firewall; but the same happens. I've also tryed to uncheck the "block icmp" on advanced settings from the router, and also enable the universal PnP. But neither of these actions seems to make the connection working on Windows Vista. :(

by: gnegrotaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:22:18ID: 23528378

Another point : in DHCP section in router, do you have something like "enabled IGMP v2 Multicast " ? Maybe in another place ? ( just 2 not make me zapping in manuals :)))))             )
If it is, enable it !!!

by: gnegrotaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:23:41ID: 23528398

btw, icmp and uPnP have nothing 2 do with . Vista are "handshake" with router but no connection are made. That's all !

by: gnegrotaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:37:45ID: 23528568

Question : Do you have an WGLDUC USB WiFi adapter ?
:D

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 08:42:03ID: 23528621

as you said, it seems a problem with Vista. I configured router for using WEP-128 bits. I know this is not as secure, but for now it seems to be the only option for connecting from Vista.

Thank you very much for your help.

by: fmarshallPosted on 2009-02-02 at 09:00:17ID: 23528858

Perhaps this will help:

Older devices require that you tell them whether you're using WPA-PSK WPA Personal WPA2-PSK WPA2-Personal, etc. etc.

Later computer interfaces seem to just know the mode the access point is using and just ask for the passphrase.

If the router is only capable of WPA then that's what you have to use - in whichever flavor of that protocol it can be set to use.  Then the clients have to match.  There are so many different client interfaces that it would only be a guess to even try to tell you step by step how to get it set up on the client / the Vista.

by: gplanaPosted on 2009-02-02 at 09:58:18ID: 23529453

Now I tried with a newer router, which acceptx WPA2-PSK with AES, and it works perfectly.

So my conclusion is that Windows Vista doesn't handle well with WPA-PSK with TKIP.

Thank you, gplana ! Sorry for not-happyend ... We'll keep the hope for Windows 7 :D !
Have a nice day !
